Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship

Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship is offered to support coursework-based Master's students studying at the University of Otago. The candidates must be first-time students for a coursework master’s program at the University of Otago.

  • It is applicable to both domestic and international students.
  • The coursework degree of the student must be by paper only.
    • If the degree includes a component of research then it must have less than 90 point value.
  • The paper year of Master’s degree of two-year research is not considered.
  • Recipients will get the amount of 10,000 NZD to cover the tuition fee of the intended program.
  • External applications must be submitted to be considered for the scholarship.

Academic merit forms basis for the selection of the awardees followed by recommendations of the Head of Department.

Application is initiated by Departmental nomination. 
Applications are currently open for 2023.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must apply for the Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship irrespective of their nationalities. Apart from that, they must meet the eligibility requirements listed below:

  • The applicant must apply for a full-time master’s degree as a first-year student.
  • Applicants must be interested to enroll for a master’s degree excluding thesis option  or;
  • Applicants must select either a research report or dissertation in the master’s with thesis option too.

Note: If the applicant had already completed their master’s degree at the University of Otago are not eligible for this.


Application Process

External applications for Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship must be submitted by the candidates at the University of Otago.

  • Applicants who have not yet enrolled for their degree will have to submit the application along with the application for admission.
  • Applicants whose program includes a choice of a research report or dissertation after the commencement of the study should submit applications directly to the Doctoral and Scholarships Office of the University.
    • It must be done soon after result for a Master’s degree is received.
    • And within one month after the commencement of their dissertation or research for their degree.

Selection Process

The selection of recipients for the Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship is based on academic records of the applicant from the most recent study.

The advice, recommendation, and ranking of the relevant Head of Department or nominee will also be taken into consideration.

Terms and Conditions regarding Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship

  • The scholarship award is applicable for one year only.
  • The benefit of the scholarship award needs to be taken in the year awarded.
  • The master’s program for which the scholarship award is applicable must be full-time.
    • Part-time study programs are usually not eligible for such an award.
  • The recipient of this scholarship is eligible to hold other scholarships or awards concurrently with this one.

Note: These terms may be altered by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Enterprise in exceptional cases.


Grant Details

Students who wish to study in New Zealand at the University of Otago can apply for Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded as a tuition fee waiver of 10, 000 NZD.

  • Any remaining amount of the fee needs to be paid as a monthly stipend across the duration of the scholarship.
  • The award is only applicable for master’s coursework applicants.
  • The number of scholarships awarded annually is not fixed.
