Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme

Research Grant Council offers Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) to international students who wish to study in Hong Kong and provides an annual stipend of 309, 600 HKD. 

Students seeking admission as full-time Ph.D. students at Research Grant Council’s partner universities are eligible to apply irrespective of prior work experience/inexperience or country of origin.

Research Council has partnered with 8 Hong Kong Universities to offer a place for students to pursue research in their respective fields.

Recipients will be awarded an annual stipend of 309, 600 HKD and a conference and research-related travel allowance of 12,900 HKD.

  • A total of 250 fellowships are given under Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme.
  • An external application must be submitted online for the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme.
  • The application deadline for the same is December 01, 2022.
  • Once registered, they will receive a reference no. and password.
  • Through this, they can apply for admission to one of the participating institutions.

Selection for the same is based on academic excellence, research ability, interpersonal skills, communication, and leadership abilities.

Eligibility Criteria

To secure a Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme, applicants must also apply to partner Universities in Hong Kong in which they wish to pursue their Ph.D. degrees. Apart from that, they must fulfill the eligibility requirements mentioned below:

  • All applicants irrespective of their nationalities are eligible.
  • Applicants must pursue Ph.D. degrees at partner universities. List of the universities is given below: 
  • Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, research, interpersonal and leadership qualities.

Application Process

External applications must be submitted online under the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme. The step-by-step process to submit the application is listed below.

Step1: Eligible students have to complete an online initial application through the Hong Kong Electronic system (HKPFSES).

Step 2: On completion of the initial application, the students will be assigned a reference number.

Step 3: Applicants can choose upto 2 programs at one or two universities in the current year.

Step 4: Supporting documents like Passport, Curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, and Proof of English language proficiency is mandatory.

Step 5: After initial application completion, applicants are required to complete and submit full applications in their respective Ph.D. programs and universities.


Selection Process

Once the applications are submitted, next follow the selection process. Shortlisted applications according to applicant’s areas of studies, will be reviewed by one of the following two Selection Panels that comprise of experts in relevant areas:

  • Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Technology
  • Humanities, Social Science and Business Studies

Applicants’ academic excellence is primarily considered. Other factors such as research ability, interpersonal skills, communication, and leadership abilities are considered too.


Grant Details

Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme is offered to all students who want to study in Hong Kong irrespective of their nationality and ethnic background.

Applicants must enroll themselves in the Ph.D. program at partner universities to be considered for the same.

Recipients will get the following benefits:

  • An annual stipend of 309,600 HKD for successful 250 students upto 3 years.
  • A research-related travel allowance of 12,900 HKD for successful 250 students upto 3 years.
