UBC Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

UBC Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award recognizes outstanding international students coming from impoverished or war-torn areas of the world. The award is offered at the University of British Columbia(UBC)  to students who have achieved academic excellence under difficult situations and cannot study without any financial aid. 

  • Students applying to study in any UG program offered by UBC are eligible for the award.
  • Students have to be nominated by their secondary institutions or recognized international NPO(S).
  • Nominees must have a Canadian student visa to be eligible for this award. 
  • The award is proportional to demonstrated financial need and sufficient to cover living expenses and tuition costs for a degree at the university.
  • The award can be renewed for three years of UG study or completion of the course whichever is earlier.

Separate application along with admission application must be submitted online to be considered for the same by December 01 of the previous year.

The deadline for 2023-24 session has expired.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate superior academic achievement and leadership potential to be eligible for the scholarship. Apart from that, they must meet the eligibility requirements listed below:

  • The applicant must be an international student who wishes to study in Canada on a Canadian study permit.
  • Must be a graduate or have recently graduated from a recognized senior secondary school.
  • Must be applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • Must meet admission requirements at UBC including general and degree-specific requirements and the English Language Admission Standard.
  • Must come from a war-torn, politically unstable, or economically disadvantaged region of the world.
  • Must have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances.
  • Have no financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary education in own country or outside.
  • Convention refugees or students intending to become landed immigrants to Canada are not eligible.
  • Nominees who have already entered or completed their post-secondary education are not eligible. 

Application Process

To secure UBC Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award, the institution must submit an award application along with admission application at UBC.

The institution must submit an award nomination package including official transcripts and other supporting documents in a sealed, school envelops with school stamp across the flap to the address mentioned below by December 01.

Student Supporting Documents

  • Extracurricular and volunteer activities awards and achievements.
  • Academic References
  • Two essays on the topic:
    • Albert Einstein said “ A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy?” Tell us what you need to be happy? (500 words)
    • Tell us about any experience or idea that you have had that shows your creativity and intellectual curiosity. (300 words)
  • Information regarding family wealth and assets of the nominee.
  • Information regarding sources of financial support.

The process for the awards is given below:

  • December 1: Submit the award application and complete the online application form for admission to the University of British Columbia. A student is free to specify two-degree choices in their application form, but only the first-choice degree will be considered for this award.
  • January 31: Meet the University of British Columbia’s English Language Admission Standard.
  • Mid-April: Results are declared and Nominees are informed for the awards.

Selection Process

Once the applications are received by the university, the selection process for the award follows. Recipients are selected based on the following parameters:

  • Academic excellence achieved under difficult circumstances,
  • Students who would be unable to attend university without financial assistance

Grant Details

UBC Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award is offered to students coming from impoverished areas of the world to study at the University of British Columbia

Separate applications are required to be considered for the same. Students who wish to begin their UG studies at UBC are eligible.

The UBC Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award is renewable for three years provided:

  • Recipients have achieved satisfactory academic standing at respective faculty.
  • Continue to demonstrate financial need.
  • Maintain a study permit to study in Canada.

Note: If the applicant is nominated for a Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award, she/he will not be considered for merit-based awards, including International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards.
