Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships

Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships, awarded for the duration of six to nine months, are designed for Indian students currently registered in a Ph.D. program in the country. As the recipient of the fellowship program, candidates will be affiliated to one of the US universities (host universities specifically) for their research grant

The benefits of Fulbright- Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship are as per following:

  • Recipients will be given a monthly allowance with other benefits.
  • J-1 visa support and round-trip economy class travel.
  • Accident and sickness program for Exchange per US Government guidelines.

Eligibility Criteria

Students who want to secure benefits of Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships must fulfill the eligibility requirements listed below:

  • Citizenship: Indian citizen in good health pursuing pre-doctoral research since or before November 2022.
  • Qualification: Registered for their Ph.D. at a university in India.
  • Experience: Research experience in the subject-specific field. Should be able to identify the resources in India and the US.
  • Conditions: 
    • Must not be residing in the U.S at the time of applying.
    • The thesis submission date should be at least three months later than the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Fellowship Scholarship date.
    • Submit the expected Ph.D. thesis submission date in the Applicant Annexure.
    • Must return to India on the completion of the fellowship.

Note: Applicants who have completed their Ph.D. are not eligible for Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships.


Application Process

To apply for Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships, applicants must complete the application form available on the official website of USIEF. The step-by-step application process is mentioned below:

  1. Review FNDR Applicant Instructions & checklist before applying for the grant.
  2. Visit the application portal at USIEF.
  3. Register using a valid email ID (Gmail, Yahoo, etc) which you are currently using. The ID will be your User Name.
  4. Create a secure and valid Password (do not write in CAPS).
  5. Complete the application form by entering all the necessary details.
  6. Submit the application form with all relevant details along with the required documents.

Applicants must note that the fellowship application form must be completed in one session only and one session expires if your page is inactive for 60 minutes. The applications must be submitted before July 17, 2023.

A letter of invitation from a U.S. institution must also be included as a part of an online application for Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships.

Note: Plagiarism and late submission of applications will not be entertained.


Selection Process

To make applicants comfortable with the whole selection process, USIEF offices organize Fulbright mentoring workshops that guide applicants on the elements of a strong application. One can contact the USIEF office in one's region for information on the mentoring workshops. Selection panels will often use the following criteria to review applications:

  • Academic credentials and professional ability
  • Merit of the proposed Fulbright project
  • Commitment to the community or national service
  • Need to conduct research in the U.S.
  • Outcomes, Potential Impact, and Benefits
  • Potential to contribute as a cultural ambassador (irrespective of specialization)

The review process takes two to three months after the application deadline. For the Interview round, shortlisted applicants must appear for an in-person interview in New Delhi. Recipients of Fullbright Scholarships will be informed through email.


Grant Details

Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships are offered to students pursuing pre-doctoral level research at any recognized institute in India. Students who want to study in the USA and pursue a research project at host institutions in the USA can apply for this scholarship.

Students must fill the external application form for Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships. The deadline for the same is July,15,2021.

Timeline and Placement Process for Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship

Mid October 2023 National interviews of short-listed candidates
End October 2023 USIEF notifies principal and alternate nominees. Nominees take TOEFL.
December 2023 USIEF forwards applications of the candidates that are recommended to the U.S. for J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) approval and placement
March-April 2024 USIEF notifies finalists
May-June 2024 Pre-Departure Orientation
July-August 2024 Pre-academic training in the U.S. (if required)
August-September 2024 Program begins

Recipients of the fellowship will be entitled to other applicable allowances and affiliation fees. Also, some of the scholars will get an opportunity to audit non-degree courses and conduct researches to gain work experience in their field. No allowances are provided for dependents. The grant is not enough to support family members.
