University of Groningen Holland Scholarship

The University of Groningen Holland Scholarship is awarded to international students who want to study in the Netherlands. The scholarship is awarded to students who want to pursue their Masters at the University of Groningen.

  • Holland Scholarship is sponsored by-
    • Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science
    • Dutch Research Universities
    • University of Applied Science
  • A scholarship amount of 5,000 EUR is awarded.
  • International students outside the EEA are eligible.
  • The amount goes towards the living expenses of a student for the first year of their studies in the Netherlands.

Applicants need to fill a Holland Scholarship form either by February 1, 2023, or June 1, 2023.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the University of Groningen Holland Scholarship, one must fulfill the eligibility criteria mentioned. Applicant must:

  • be an international student outside of the EEA
    • European Economic Area (EEA) involves countries from the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
    • Students from Switzerland and Suriname are not eligible to apply.
  • have an admission offer from the University of Groningen.
  • must be enrolled in one of the eligible Master’s programs at the University of Groningen.
  • have excellent grades during UG studies
  • fulfill the specific requirements of the University of Groningen
  • not have a degree from a university or college in the Netherlands.

Applicants must make sure that they have an admission offer for one of the Master’s programs at the University of Groningen that are deemed eligible for the Holland Scholarship.


Application Process

To apply for the Holland Scholarship one must fulfill the eligibility criteria. To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must have completed the admission process at the University of Groningen and must have received an admission offer from the university.

Applicants are required to complete a Holland Scholarship application form online. The supplemental documents required along with the scholarship application include:

  • Copy of CV
  • Conditional admission letter from the University of Groningen
  • Motivation letter for Holland Scholarship stating the reasons why the applicant is the right candidate for the scholarship.

The applications for the University of Groningen Holland Scholarship are available for two calls-

  • Deadline for the first call is February 1, 2023 (23:59 CEST)
  • Deadline for the second call is June 1, 2023 (23:59 CEST)

One can apply for one of the calls only. The incomplete applications will be rejected straight away.


Selection Process

The University of Groningen Holland Scholarship is awarded to students on the basis of:

  • Academic Merit
    • Results obtained in study programs
    • Academic research activities
    • Overall evaluation of previous education.
  • Holland Scholarship motivational statement

The university will release the rankings of the students after the evaluation of all the applications received. Applicants must have excellent grades.


Grant Details

University of Groningen Holland Scholarship is awarded to students outside of the EEA who want to study in the Netherlands at the University of Groningen. A scholarship amount of 5,000 EUR is awarded to eligible students against the living expenses for the first year of studies.

  • Holland scholarship is not a full scholarship.
  • Recipients are required to get a student visa to the Netherlands.
  • Proof of sufficient funds is required to get their student visa/ residence permit application.
  • After their arrival at the university, the award amount will be transferred into their Dutch bank account in one installment.

Applicants of the University of Groningen Holland Scholarship must make sure to complete their admission as well as scholarship applications on time. Upon receiving the scholarship offer, applicants must accept the scholarship award.
