Google's Women Techmakers Program

Google’s Women Techmakers (WTM) program is meant to strengthen the women workforce and dismantle gender barriers in the field of technology. It offers students from across the globe to study abroad at globally accredited institutions, especially at Irish universities. Google offers three scholarships under Google's Women Techmakers Program namely:

  • Women Techmakers Scholarship for Computer Science,
  • Women Techmakers Scholarship for gaming in partnership with Stadia
  • Women Techmakers Irish University Scholarship.

The scholarship is provided region-wise: Asia Pacific, North America, and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

  • The award amount value of the scholarship varies from region to region.
    • In North America, scholars receive 10,000 USD (for US students)
    • $5,000 CAD (for Canadian students).
  • The value of the WTM Scholarship for Computer Science and Gaming in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa is 7,000 EUR.
    • The value of the WTM Irish University scholarship is 5,000 EUR.
    • In the Asia Pacific, the Women Techmakers scholars receive the cash awards.
  • This is a one-time scholarship and it cannot be renewed.
  • Currently, the application window for the scholarship is closed.

The scholarship is awarded based on the candidate’s academic performance, leadership, and contribution to the community of women in tech.

Eligibility Criteria

Women applicants who are enrolled at an accredited university and studying computer science or any subject related to technology while graduating in 2020 and beyond are eligible for this scholarship.

The Women Techmakers Program offers three types of scholarship depending upon different regions of the world.

For Asia specific region:

Eligibility Criteria the Women Techmakers Scholarship

  • Women candidate having an excellent academic background and technical skills
  • Studying computer science, computer engineering, or any technical subject
  • Students graduating in 2020 or beyond
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited university.

For Europe middle east and Asia region:

Eligibility Criteria for WTM Scholarship for Computer Science and Gaming

  • Currently, be enrolled at an accredited university for the 2023-2024 academic year
  • Intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. program at a university in Europe, the Middle East or Africa for the 2023-2024 academic year
  • Studying computer science, computer engineering, informatics OR be studying video game programming, game engineering, game design, and development, or a closely related field in gaming
  • Demonstrate a strong academic record
  • Exemplify leadership and demonstrate a passion for increasing the involvement of women in technology (i.e. computer science or gaming)

Eligibility Criteria WTM Irish University Scholarship

  • Must have a strong academic record
  • Currently enrolled in the first or second year of any undergraduate program at an accredited university or college in Ireland
  • Students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in technology from an accredited university or institute of technology in Ireland are considered eligible
  • Those who are studying computer science, computer engineering, or any technology-related subject can apply for this scholarship

Candidates who have applied previously or ended up as finalists are eligible to apply again BUT not the recipients of the scholarship.


Application Process

The application for the Women Techmaker Scholarship program is accepted online only. The application form is available on the official website of Women Techmakers.

Applicants applying for any of the scholarships offered under Google's Women Techmakers Program have to fill application form separately. Apart from this, the general requirements for the application form are listed below:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Updated resume
  • LOR from a supervisor, professor, instructor, or an advisor
  • Proof of coding competition
  • Background information
  • Responses of five essay questions and three short answer questions

The application window for the scholarship is closed right now and will open again in Fall 2023.


Selection Process

After the successful submission of the application, next comes the selection process. The selection process for Google's Women Techmakers Program Scholarship will be done by a selection panel at google.

The selection for the scholarship will be based on strong academic documents, leadership quality, passion for involvement in technology, and essay questions. Recipients of the scholarship will be notified by the selection panel at Google.

Terms and Conditions for WTM program

  • The applicants may refuse Google to collect or use the personal information that has been provided through the application.
  • Students who are residents of embargoed countries or prohibited by applicable export controls and sanctions programs are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

All scholarship recipients will be invited to the annual Google Scholars Retreat in the summer of 2023 to connect with fellow scholars, network with Googlers, and participate in a number of development workshops.


Grant Details

The selected candidates are awarded the following grants and perks: 

  1. Scholarship: The winners of the Women techmakers computer science and gaming will receive a grant of 7000€ each. The winners of the Women techmakers Irish University will receive 5000€ each. This grant is provided on an annual basis for the duration of their studies. 
  2. Retreat: A 3 days all-expenses-paid trip to one of the Google offices is provided to all the scholars as an opportunity to connect with fellow scholars and mentors at Google. Seminars and workshops are conducted for the scholars to give them insights into how the daily operations are processed at Google and what are their visions.  
  3. Community: A network of women across the world in the technological field to help you, encourage you and work together and support the global community of women in tech and collaborate on projects to make a continued impact with and many more opportunities to come your way when you get the scholarship. 

The Google Women Techmaker Scholarship aims at empowering women in the field of computer science by encouraging them to excel in technological and role models in the same.
