Killam Predoctoral Scholarships

Killam Predoctoral Scholarships are offered to students who are enrolled or intend to enroll in a thesis-based program. The scholarship applies to students pursuing any program master’s and doctorate level degrees at Dalhousie University.

  • Killam Predoctoral scholarships are awarded to top-ranked eligible applications in the Harmonized Scholarship Process.
  • Scholarships are offered only for a tenure of 2 years

Killam Predoctoral Scholarships offers the scholarship in Two levels:

  • Level 1:
    • Applies to students who are accepted in a Master’s program directly after completion UG degree
    • Value of aid: 42,000 CAD plus a $2,500/term international tuition fee supplement if applicable.
    • Support for a period of 2 years
  • Level 2:
    • Applies to students in a doctoral program
    • Value of aid: 42,000 CAD 
  • Level 3:
    • Applies to students in a post-doctoral program
    • Value of aid: 50,000 CAD 

Applicants must complete an application on Harmonized Scholarship Process to be considered for Killam Predoctoral Scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, the applicants must meet the eligibility criteria listed below:

  • Open for both domestic and international students.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.7/4.3 on a Dalhousie Grade Scale
  • Must have applied directly or have been nominated by a university for national scholarships relevant to their discipline (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, or equivalent in the case of non-Canadian students).
  • Must be pursuing masters and doctoral programs at Dalhousie University.
  • Must eligible for the reception of the scholarship support for a minimum of 2 years.

Note: As applicants must be eligible to receive scholarship support for at least two years, only master’s students who have yet to begin their program may apply


Application Process

Applicants who want to secure Killam Predoctoral Scholarships must apply to Dalhousie University’s unified system for receiving applications for all possible purposes.

Part of it is the Harmonized Scholarship Process, via which an applicant can apply for the scholarship. Complete an application form along with required documents for the Master’s Competition or Doctoral Competition.

Note: Only one Harmonized Scholarship application will be entertained per student in an academic year.

Please note that all application materials including transcripts and reference letters must be submitted by this deadline. Incomplete applications will be disqualified.

Major scholarship competitions for students pursuing thesis-based programs, including the Harmonized Scholarship Process for the 2023-2024 academic year, are now closed. 

Award offers from this competition will be announced beginning in March, 2023. 


Selection Process

For the selection of candidates, two sub-committees under the Killam Selection Committee are formed.

Each Committee member reads and rates all the applications allocated to them before the final meeting at which a ranked list of applicants to be forwarded to Dean of Graduate Studies is produced.

Also, GPA is calculated by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Selection Criteria and Weightings

The availability of funds, the success rate of nominees and the number of successful renewals, etc. are some of the factors affect a number of awards offered to students.


Grant Details

The Killiam Predoctoral Scholarship applies to the doctoral and master’s program at Dalhousie University.

The Killam scholarship will grant the award to two categories of applicants.

  • Level I- valued at 42,000 CAD plus a CAD 2,500/term international tuition fee supplement if applicable.
  • Level II- valued at 42,000 CAD
  • Level III- valued at 50,000 CAD

Students who receive Killam Predoctoral Scholarships along with external awards e.g., NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, etc.will be honored as an Honourary Killam Predoctoral Scholar and their external award will be supplemented up to the level of a Killam Predoctoral Scholarship.

Please note that the substantial change in award value may impact funding received from other sources starting in May 2023.
