About Max Arthur Macauliffe

He joined Indian Civil Services in 1862 and held several senior positions until his retirement in 1893. He was a prolific scholar and an Indian culture immersed person. He became well renowned for translating Sikh scripture and history into English and for promotion of Sikkim and Punjabi Culture at an International level in the late 19th century.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility requirements for NUI’s Max Arthur Macauliffe Special Merit Scholarships are:

  • Applicant must an Indian citizen.
  • The applicant must have secured admission at NUI for a Taught-Master’s program.
  • The applicant must hold a four-year bachelor’s degree from a reputed institution.

Application Process

The application process for the Max Arthur Macauliffe Merit Scholarship consists of two stages:

Stage 1: Application for admission to the National University of Ireland.
Stage 2: Max Arthur Macauliffe Special Merit Scholarship Application.

Along with the scholarship application, applicants have to submit a personal statement. It should be written in MS Word in a maximum of 1,000 words. The statement should include,

  • Applicant’s interest in studying at NUI Galway.
  • How the applicant foresees his/her relationship with the university in the future.
  • How the applicant will promote links with the university, both during the tenure of the scholarship and as alumni.

The personal statement must be emailed to InternationalMarketingRecruitment@nuigalway.ie. It should include a title of the scholarship scheme the applicant is applying for in the subject of the email and also the PAC application number. 

Note: Within 10 days of scholarship application submission, applicants will get e-receipt confirming the same


Selection Process

Recipients of the scholarship are selected based on their academic merit and personal statement

Each scholarship application is also reviewed to ensure that the student has applied for the  Ireland student VISA

Note: NUI Galway reserves the right to terminate the scholarship if the recipient fails to adhere to the terms and conditions.
