Named after the famous leader in the field of geo-botany Ms. Monica Cole, Monica Cole Research Grant is an annual grant of £1,000 offered by the Royal Geographical Society. The grant is awarded to students in the field of physical geography for undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Monica Cole Research Grant, the applicants must be registered with any UK institution for higher studies.

  • The level of studies can be undergraduate or postgraduate.
  • An applicant is not required to have a geography degree or work in a geography department. However, the project undertaken must advance in geographical knowledge.
  • The project presented to obtain the award must not have any prepaid travel involved by any commercial organization involved in the project.

Monica Cole Research Grant recipients must fulfill any ethical and risk assessment requirements of their university or college and adhere to the laws and customs of any locations in which the work will be undertaken.


Application Process

The application process for Monica Cole Research Grant takes up to four months for processing. To seek the grant the interested applicants have to send their application to the Society’s Grants Officer at grants@rgs.org.

The grant applications need to have the following details:

  • Name, affiliation (Name of the institution), Contact details with mandatory mention of an email address and RGS-IBG membership status (if relevant).
  • Students must mention the year of starting and completing their courses.
  • The title, summary, aim, and objective of the project, method, and detail of research to be conducted, the outcome expected, etc. must be submitted with the application.
  • The applicant has to submit his/her curriculum vitae with relevant experience and expertise to carry out the project.
  • The applicant needs to give details of educational qualifications and proof of English language proficiency through one of the standardized exams to study in the UK to satisfy the Society that he/she is aptly equipped to do the project.
  • Details of all the permissions required/sought for the project including safety and risk management of self and the members involved.
  • Two referee statements are also to be submitted.

Applicants are required to submit all the above documents before February 3.

Note : If you are a PhD student, one referee should be your supervisor.


Selection Process

An external expert panel at the Royal Geographical Society screens the applications and goes through all the details to ascertain the feasibility of the project and the ability of the applicant to carry it out. If required, a personal interview is also taken.

The selection for the Monica Cole Research Grant is based upon academic merit. All applications are reviewed by appropriate experts. Recommendations are passed to the rewarding committee for a final decision.

Recipients are informed about the results in writing. Recipients are required to adhere to the regulations relating to the research grant.


Grant Details

The Monica Cole Research Grant is awarded in the field of physical geography to the applicant of any study level registered with an institution of higher studies in the United Kingdom.

The student/applicant needs to submit a detailed project along with his/her personal details and academic achievements detailing his/her capabilities to undertake and complete the project under the rules and guidelines of the Society.

The applicant also has to showcase the ability and willingness to carry out the project legally and ethically after seeking all the required permissions and by remaining on the right side of the law in every single activity needed to undertake or complete the project.

The grant of £1,000 is provided to the eligible candidate that should be used judiciously.

A continuous reporting system needs to be followed by the grantee. After every travel, fieldwork, data collection exercise, etc. recipients of the Monica Cole Research Grant are required to submit

  • a report of around 500 words
  • a 1,000 words report detailing the work done
  • high-resolution JPEG images

The given grant is to be used for the purpose of geographical research and fieldwork only. Any remaining funds must be refunded back to society after the completion of the project.

Note: Applicants may only apply for one grant within an annual cycle, with the exception of the Gilchrist Fieldwork Award which can be applied to in addition to any other post-PhD researcher grant

Grants are not transferrable to individuals or organisations.
