The National University of Ireland offers two full fee waiver Sir Peter Freyer Special Merit Scholarship to Indian applicants who are seeking admission in any postgraduate course at the university. The scholarship is awarded in the name of Sir Peter Freyer, a famous pioneer in biomedical innovation who served the Indian Medical Service for 20 years.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Sir Peter Freyer Special Merit Scholarship, applicants must have completed the undergraduate degree and seeking admission to a postgraduate taught degree at NUI with an excellent academic record.

  • Students intending to enroll only in a taught postgraduate program are eligible
  • The scholarships are for full-time programs
  • Applicants for the Freyer Scholarships must have completed the received an admission offer from National University of Ireland
  • An acceptance deposit must be made to the university

Applicants for the Freyer Scholarships are required to complete their admissions to the university. 


Application Process

For seeking one of the Sir Peter Freyer Special Merit Scholarships, applicants are required to complete their applications for admission to the National University of Ireland and accept the admission offer via payment of an acceptance deposit.

Upon accepting the admission offer from NUI, applicants are required to submit a Personal Statement to InternationalScholarships@nuigalway.ie. The personal statement must be a maximum of 1,000 words covering points such as:

  • Applicant’s interest in studying in Ireland at NUI Galway
  • Applicant’s short term and long term future goals keeping NUI in mind
  • What contribution the applicant will be able to make in promoting NUI and its programs

Applicants must make sure to complete and submit their applications on time with all the required documents.


Selection Process

The selection criteria for Sir Peter Freyer Special Merit Scholarship are the academic- merit and the personal statement written by the applicant sent separately after confirming the admission to the particular course.

The applicants who confirm their admission to the National University of Ireland are shortlisted by the selection committee on merit basis after it is ascertained that they are eligible to get the scholarship. A personal interview may be organized if required by the selection committee either in person or electronically.

All those who will be chosen for the scholarship will be informed by email and they have to acknowledge the receipt and confirm their willingness to utilize the award failing which will be reallocated to the next in line candidate. In case a response is not sent to the students within 10 days, applicants are required to inform the university.


Grant Details

The National University of Ireland, Galway offers Peter Freyer Special Merit Scholarships to Indian applicants who apply for a postgraduate full-time taught program. After confirming the offer, the applicant automatically gets registered for the consideration of this scholarship but has to write a personal statement in about 1000 words for the selection process.

The scholarship is a full tuition fee waiver for the first year. Applications are reviewed as of May to ensure that all the applicants are making arrangements for a student visa to Ireland.

Terms and Conditions

  • The scholarship awarded is for the first year tuition fees of the applicant and is not renewable.
  • The scholarship is given as a fee waiver only and will not be disbursed in any other form.
  • If an applicant will not confirm the receipt of the award, the university will reallocate it to the next selected candidate on the list.
  • Clubbing of any other grant/scholarship whether internal or external is not permitted.
  • The recipients of the scholarships have to participate in the promotional activities carried out by the university to internationalize its courses and programs.
  • The students receiving the award have to maintain full-time student- status on campus.

The applicants are advised to check with the university at the time of seeking admission whether their course will be eligible for the scholarships or not.
