RMIT University, Australia offers RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship to masters and post-doctorate students who are involved in research for their studies. A stipend amount of AUD 33,826 is awarded annually against the tuition fee.

  • Successful international students are also awarded
    • an RTP International Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship (RIFOS)
    • an RMIT Research International Tuition Fee Scholarship (RRITFS)
  • The scholarship also allows maternity and paternity paid leaves as per its rules.
  • A relocation allowance of AUD 515 per adult and AUD 255 per child, with a maximum limit of AUD 1,540 is also provided
  • The duration approved for the full-time research stipend is
    • three years for a post-doctoral program(extendable for a further 6 months with approval from the university)
    • two years for a master research degree (no extension is permitted)

 Applicants must complete the admission applications to a postgraduate research program at RMIT University on time to be eligible for the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility for RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship (RRSS) depends on academic achievement, research outputs and relevant professional experience of the students. The applicants who meet the following eligibility criteria are given priority:

  • Scored 80% or higher in the final two years of the qualifying program(s)
  • having an equivalent level of academic attainment, that includes
    • The previous study
    • Relevant work experience
    • Research publications
    • Other research experience
  • Enrolled for a master’s research degree or a postdoctoral degree at RMIT Australian campus
  • Must not have completed a graduate research program at the same or higher course level
  • Not have received any RMIT or Commonwealth-funded PG scholarship
  • International applicants must meet the English language requirements
Exam Minimum Required Scores
IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6 in each module)
TOEFL (iBT) 92 (with minimum 20 in each module)
PTE 50 (no communication band less than 42)

NOTE: If an applicant is already doing research, they should have around 12 to 24 months remaining in their research work at the time of grant of the scholarship.


Application Process

The applicant has to submit the application for joining the research program as per the university guidelines after meeting all the eligibility criteria. The university announces the dates to submit the expression of interest and the full application required for admission to the university.

  • Applicants are required to complete the admission and scholarship application form
  • International applicants are required to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) and their scholarship application

Note : Scholarship applicants must provide the names of academic staff who have agreed to supervise your research and upload correspondence from the staff member indicating agreement to provide supervision when completing the Expression of Interest (EOI). Your application may be unsuccessful if you fail to do this.

Selection Process

The RMIT selection committee has its own parameters to scrutinize and screen the scholarship applications. The selection process is quite competitive and based on merit.

  • Applications are taken up round wise hence applicants have to meet EOI and application deadlines.
  • Applications are ranked based on the ranking model approved by RMIT's Research Committee.
  • The rankings are provided based on
    • academic achievement
    • research outputs
    • relevant professional experience

The selection committee informs the winners and provides a time frame to accept the offer.

As the holder of this scholarship you:

  • must commence your studies in the scholarship commencement period in which you are applying
  • are not able to defer your studies to another year. If a deferral is required, you must apply again the following year if you are unable to take up your award.

Grant Details

The RMIT University, Australia offers the RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship of AUD 33,826 annually to students pursuing a research program at RMIT University. Apart from this, an additional of an RTP International Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship (RIFOS) and an RMIT Research International Tuition Fee Scholarship (RRITFS) is awarded to international students, while Australian and New Zealand students are provided an RTP Fee Offset Scholarship. Successful international students have an added advantage to receive additional tuition and research grants automatically with this stipend. These tuition fees offset grants allows to have almost free education at the university.

The amount of stipend scholarship is adjusted against tuition fees and living expenses.

Terms and Conditions

  • RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship applications must be submitted within the deadline.
  • Candidates already holding completed research degrees at the master or doctoral level are not eligible to apply for the scholarship.
  • Any applicant who is already receiving an equivalent award or scholarship covering 75% or more of the annual value of the RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship amount is also not eligible to receive this award.

The scholarships are basically for research students who are either applying fresh or are currently doing research with a significant time of research still remaining to receive the scholarship.
