Chevening Scholarship

Chevening Scholarship is designed for international students planning to begin a one-year master’s degree from a university in the UK. It is a fully-funded program which covers tuition fee, travel, and accommodation to stay in the UK.

  • It is mandatory to receive an unconditional admission offer from a UK university.
  • Applicants must belong to Chevening eligible-country or territory like India, China, etc.
  • Chevening UK scholarship has a fixed application timeline:
    • Applications begin in August.
    • Submission deadline is in November.
    • Applicants are shortlisted for interviews from Early to mid-February.
    • Scholarship Interviews take place between March and May.
    • Decisions are announced in mid-June.
  • Chevening scholarship application forms are country-specific.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for Chevening UK Scholarship, applicants must fulfill all the requirements given below:

  • Citizen of Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  • Completion of the UG program to apply for the PG program in the UK university.
    • Must have gained at least upper second-class 2:1 honors or equivalent.
  • Unconditional admission offer from one of the universities in the UK.
  • Return to the home country for at least two years after the completion of the award.
  • Work experience of at least two years.
  • Fulfillment of Chevening English language requirement.

Chevening Scholarship English Language Requirement

Earlier, the demonstration of proficiency in the English language is the core requirement for the Chevening Scholarship. However, now the committee has removed the English Language Requirement from 2021 onwards. 

Acceptable tests and minimum score requirements are tabulated below:

Applicants must have taken the test on or after October 2020. There is no restriction on the number of tests an applicant chooses to apply for. However, Chevening will not cover the expenses of the language test(s).

Eligible Types of Work Experience

Applicants who do not have at least two years of work experience, will not be able to submit their Chevening UK Scholarship application.

Types of work experience that are eligible for the Chevening Scholarship India include:

  • Full-time employment
  • Part-time employment
  • Voluntary work
  • Paid or unpaid internships

As per Chevening Scholarship guidelines, two years of work experience means that an applicant has completed 2800 hours of work.


Application Process

All candidates are required to submit an online application form and submit it before November 1, 2023, as specified by the Chevening.

Candidates must note that application form is country-specific. For example, applications for Chevening Scholarship India vary from that of Chevening Scholarship Australia.

The step-by-step process of applying for the Chevening Scholarship are:

  • Apply for the desired master's program at a UK university.
    • Applications can be made to any 3 UK universities covered under the Chevening Program.
  • Apply for Chevening UK Scholarship in August via OAS (Online Application System)
  • Answer all the questions (100-500 words)
  • Submit the required student supporting documents in JPG/PNG/PDF format.
    • Document size should not increase 5MB.

Selection Process

The selection process of the Chevening Scholarship takes a minimum of eight months from the application deadline to the selections for an award. Chevening Scholarship decisions are announced by mid-June.

Guidelines for Interviews

Candidates are interviewed by panels at British embassies and the British high commissions, according to their availability in nearby cities/states.

  • English will be the medium of communication.
  • Interview questions will comprise of personal and professional aspirations

Before attending the interview, a candidate needs to upload the following documents to the online Chevening application system:

  • Education documents (copies of all certificates and/or transcripts).
  • A short biography about you
  • Two reference letters.
  • Passport/national ID (bring at the time of the interview)

NOTE: Interview slots are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, and once booked, cannot be changed. Only in certain circumstances, the Skype interview is permitted.

Guidelines for References

References should demonstrate your:

  • Intellectual, Personal, and Interpersonal qualities.
  • Skills of leadership and networking.
  • Ability to complete the academic program such as engineering, accounting in the UK.

It should cover questions like:

  1. How long has the applicant known to the referee?
  2. Capacities measured? (e.g. professional, supervisory, educational, voluntary, or religious, etc…)
  3. Regular contact with the applicant of the referee?
  4. Overall endorsement of the prospective applicant.

References are reviewed by the High Commission/British embassy during the latter stages of the selection, so provide only relevant details, written in English only.
