Branch change at IIT Delhi is tough, you will need to have around 8 CG. For SC, and ST students the required CG is around 7.0.  Every department allows 15 percent of students to exchange. If two students with the same CG apply for branch change, preference is given to the student with better JEE rank.

Some departments also have additional prerequisites for branch change. You may require to score a minimum B-grade in a course related to that department.

You can change your branch at IIT Delhi after completing your first year but some rules need to be followed. The procedure is not the same and each college has its own set of instructions. Given below are the general rules for changing the branch at IIT Delhi.

  • The student must have a cumulative grade (CG) of 8.0 or above in the case of general and 7.0 or above in the case of SC or ST category students.
  • Only 15% of the seats are available. That means, the number of students can neither increase nor decrease beyond 15% of its present strength.
  • If some students happen to have the same CG, the higher JEE rank holder will get preference.
  • Many departments also require students to score B grade or above in a basic science/engineering course related to that department.
  • Although, if you wish to choose a department that was available to you based on your JEE rank at the time of counseling then the department does not insist on the B grade or 8.0 CG. But the allotment would still be based on merit list and CG. So scoring a good CG is necessary.

One important point to note is that even though the minimum required CG is 8.0, but the actual cut off of each department varies each year and you may require a higher CG to be qualified for branch change. Cut off for branches such as Computer Science and Electrical Engineering crosses a mark of 9.7 and 9.4 CG respectively.
