IITs and NITs offer exceptional education in the technical field. Here are some of the key differences between these institutes.

  • IIT is a Govt. funded association of educational institutes aimed to provide highly skilled engineers, scientists, and technologists. NITs are independent technological and research institutes.
  • At present, there are 23 IITs and 31 NITs in India.
  • For undergraduate studies, IIT and NIT both take admission through JEE Advanced and Main.
  • IITs offer better infrastructure and facilities.
  • Placement and packages solely depend on the particular institute. IITs usually have a better brand presence in the industry.

While choosing between IIT and NIT, research the specific institute, in detail.

IIT Delhi is better than NIT. One of my friends studied at IIT Delhi, and here is why you should choose IIT Delhi over NIT.

  1. Campus: The campus of IIT Delhi is of decent size. Everything is within reach from the college gate to the fields.
  2. Academics: You have to take multiple exams from two minors and one major. You will mostly the semester prepare for the exams. There are quizzes, practicals, assignments, and more in IIT.
  3. Faculty: Faculty qualities differ as per different departments. CS department professors are cooperative though. IMHO department faculty can be improved.
  4. Hostel: Hostel life of IIT is fun. The buildings of hostels are old, heated, overcrowded. There is no fixed timing of coming and going out. The hostel is 24 hours open and has a night canteen which runs till 3:30 am. You can also get breakfast at 7:15 am. There is also an internet connection which gets inactive from 1 am to 6 am. There is different hostel life for different students.
  5. Mess: Mess food can be tolerable on starting days but you may not enjoy it. But there are several other places where you can eat on campus. You can survive the semester with outside food, and fill your stock with home food once you are back on holidays.

Life in NITs is also good. But since he is a student of IIT, he is a bit partial with his opinion. The only things that will differ are the placement stats and the course fees. Also, you will receive the famous IIT tag. Therefore, if you are looking to join any one of them then choose, IIT over NIT.
