My friend who used to be a student of NIT Jamshedpur has said that students start to get on internships from the third year onwards.

Some of the companies that visit the campus for offering internships are Amazon, Yodlee, Accolite, etc.
Even though the questions asked by them depend on the company but they generally ask algorithms, DBMS, and data structures.
Their questions will make you put your coding skills and thinking skills to good use. It can be a bit puzzling.
You will be selected for the internship in the firm and spends some time working as an intern. Permanent placement is offered by the organization before, and sometimes during the placement process.
The placement is determined by the performance of the intern during the period of internship.
CGPA obviously matters as far as internships are concerned. Having a high CGPA will certainly get you more chances. Companies like Amazon look for coding skills and do not look for your CGPA.

Even off-campus internships are lucrative opportunities. Companies will contact you by email if your coding skills are up to the mark. If you have a good LinkedIn profile, startups or small companies will most likely contact you by email. Internships can also be found on the companies’ websites.
