Continue working if you enjoy your job and see it developing your ambitions and you as a person. Make a plan to work for a few years, switch jobs/profiles a few times to gain more diverse experience, and then get an MBA from a more internationally renowned business school in the US/Europe. If you were able to get into IIM-A now, chances are you will be able to do so again while you are still young.

Join IIM-Ahmedabad if you don't yet have clear life ambitions/roadmaps and don't see much value in your job beyond its salary value. As you get older, you will lose direction and enthusiasm in a soulless job.

You will then be too old for IIMs but not competitive enough for schools in the United States or Europe, or even ISB or IIMA PGPX. So it's better to get that degree now rather than later.

A five digit salary could represent anything, from as less as 10,000 to as high as 99,999. Thus, it mainly depends on how much the companies are offering. They also depend on the average salary packages offered and the cost of doing an MBA.

Students can easily receive a salary of 10,000 to 60,000 by the companies. Whereas 70,000 to 99,999 might be harder to receive during placements.

Also what you want in your life totally depends on it. So, according to one of my friends, Before IIM, She worked at NetApp (MTS in WAFL Team). On the other side she was exploring other sections. She worked in a theater company for some time which developed her passion for writing.

Frankly she was not happy with her job. So after sometimes opting for IIM will help her decide what will prove to be better for her career.

She studied for two years in IIM, making friends and learning from well-educated teachers and started developing an interest in photography.

After two years of IIM, she left her job and decided to give complete attention to her passion. i.e., photography and travelling. Now it’s been more than a year. She is really happy delving into attaining more and more information on that particular subject. A year of taking pictures and travelling shaped her into a more kind and warm person she is today.

There are 3 things you need to consider before choosing a career. These include -

  • Long Term Investment - This is very important, as you have to consider the fact that how much the degree will be important in the future. How valuable it will prove to be.
  • Return of Investment - ROI or Return Of Investment is very important, as it is the amount you invest to study a course and expect a better placement in your chosen field. Studying in IIMA will provide you with the brand value, some recruiters tend to look for.
  • But if you want to go for your chosen field then, you should work hard on acquiring the skills required to do the job. Being skilled is another important point to get selected by the recruiters, if you do not have an IIM tag.

Looking back, she always says that her professors and my peers / seniors motivated her a lot. The day she told us about her career change, most of us called her / congratulated her. Some are currently helping her also in running the business and some are mentoring her.

The most challenging thing in life is figuring out what you actually want in your life. There is so much chaos, temptation to divert your mind into something which you actually do want to do in real life. I hope you will make a better choice in the future and listen to your heart.
