Why is it that most non-engineers end up unplaced at IIM Ahmedabad?

To begin with, being a non-engineer is preferable to being an engineer who pursued engineering because of the survival of the fittest. You may have some non-engineering DNA, which means you have no interest in technology or have lost interest. Understanding some technical concepts and cramming shit semester after semester will not make you a good engineer. Some companies may place you because they need to have a bench workforce. That's all.

If you are interested in engineering, you will excel in whatever company you work for. There is no one who is not placed solely on the basis of their non-engineering background.

My friend recently graduated from IIM Ahmedabad and comes from a Law background. She was also a member of the Placement Committee at IIM-A.

Any student from PGP who sits for placements is placed. Often, non-engineers have a very different viewpoint and are respected by recruiters for this. It is not that engineers are not appreciated, but you need all kinds of students to maintain diversity.

The push for diversity within the IIMs is also a recognition of industry demand. It can be an indication that in undergraduate studies, Indians are ultimately free to pursue what they really want.

The argument that non-engineers are diluting the industry name and can’t keep up with the course work does not make sense. At best, my friend’s grades were average, but it was definitely not because she was unable to cope. Although both engineers and non-engineers did well in her batch. Students who did well in academics are smart, motivated, and hardworking people. Their background didn't decide their ability to do well academically or learn until coming to IIM-A.

The arguments that non-engineers cut themselves off from co-curricular activities or resort to underhand means to scrape by are nothing but sort of amusing. No IIM A PGP students stay unplaced according to the placement record.
