As an IISER student, you will have a variety of job opportunities available to you depending on your field of study and your interests.

Some potential career paths for IISER graduates are mentioned below:

  • Research and development in academia or industry
  • Teaching and education
  • Science policy and administration
  • Science journalism and communication
  • Data analysis and data science
  • Environmental science and conservation
  • Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals
  • Space science and technology
  • Computer science and engineering
  • Physics and engineering

Most IISER students opt for Ph.D. Once they complete their Ph.D., they become independent researchers or do research-based work in a company. Some prefer doing a post-doc to become a professor. Very few Ph.D. students start working after getting their degree.

BS-MS Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata (2019)

Ph.D. is the most preferred career path for students pursuing BS-MS in IISER. The atmosphere at IISER is different from IITs and NITs. Most students are more interested in research rather than placements.

  • Every year students from IISER get into reputed institutes like Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, Yale, MIT, etc.
  • Some students also join various PSUs like ONGC, IOCL, etc. through GATE.
  • Some private Pharma and Chemical companies also visit the IISER campus for recruiting students.

Although the number is less, few students opt for UPSE or CAT as well.

The BS-MS degree from IISER can land you into various job positions. This degree trains the students in science and research. One needs to partake in research projects and ultimately do a research thesis in the Master’s to hold the degree of BS-MS.

Paths after BS-MS from IISER are mentioned below:

  1. Go for Ph.D.: As this degree inculcates learning in research, most of the students undertake a Ph.D. from a foreign or Indian institute. Ph.D. opens a lot of options for you with a hiked pay-scale.
  2. Academia: Join as a research scientist post-PhD or as a researcher in Labs or Universities. Even you can join as a professor in various institutes after clearing teaching entrances.
  3. Industry: You can join industries or companies in their R&D department or as scientists.
  4. Data Scientist/ Consultants: Physics and Applied Math students can land into financial institutions to become Data Scientist, Management Consultants, Coding jobs, etc.
  5. Pharma Industry/ Bio-Tech Industry: Students with Chemistry and Biology majors can go for pharma industries, biotechnological industries, or even agricultural industries
  6. Coaching Institutes: You can join the coaching institutes as many IITians do. It is also a lucrative job if you secure a place in top coaching institutes like FIITJEE etc.
  7. Competitive exams or MBA: Students can write administrative exams like IAS/ IPS/ government exams. MBA is also a good option as it can land you in a good position in a short span of time.
  8. Scientific Writing/ Scientific Journalism: Both of these are enthralling fields to take. Scientific writing can be a great option if you have exemplary writing skills. You can write about various new research topics like the cell, nature, etc. Journalism is also a great option if your interest lies here.
  9. Own Business/ Research Lab: If you want to be an entrepreneur, starting your own business or research lab can be the best option. It might take time to establish, but it will be something of your own.

These were plenty of options after a degree from IISER. You will get plenty of opportunities after IISER to earn good amount of money if look closely at these opportunities.
