The choice is dependent upon your field of interest. At DSI, you will find supervisors for various specializations in the field of Economics, the major ones being - Development, Econometrics, Agriculture, Public Policy, Environment, Production, Finance, Micro, and Macro. There is at least one supervisor each for the different specializations.

To get admission into DSI, a candidate, however, must clear the entrance and the interview.

Research from IIMs is concentrated in the areas of management, finance, monetary and fiscal policy.

You must, therefore, make a choice keeping in mind your field of interest and the availability of the right supervisor.

We need to consider two types of students who are planning to do their research in economics.

Types of Students in Ph.D.:

  • One who is fixed in the area in which they want to do research. They need guides who are publishing regularly in good journals in all the mentioned institutes. They can select and proceed with the guide in whichever institute they are available.
  • Another type of student is those who haven’t yet decided on their area of research and still exploring options. Good guidance and coursework are of paramount importance for them. This is the area where IIM Bangalore takes an edge over the DSE.

Comparison:

  • Among the three IIM’s, IIM Bangalore has emerged to be the best when it comes to research in economics. It now has a top-class economics department.
  • The faculty has published in journals like Journal of Economic Theory and Economic Letters etc.
  • Delhi School of Economics has renowned faculty but they lack a bit in peer exposure and interactions.

So, when it comes to research, the culture and faculties give an edge to IIM Bangalore over the Delhi School of Economics.

Apart from these universities ISI Delhi has also made its mark and is one of the best in this field. Their training pedagogy is at par with top US universities and has world-class faculties. The flagship courses of ISI Delhi are the Microeconomics department and then Development Economics. It is one of the best places to pursue your Ph.D. compared to other institutions in India.
