Which IIM is better, IIM Shillong, IIM Ranchi or IIM Rohtak? Why?

Every MBA aspirant faces the duration of multiple converts which leaves him in a dilemma for choosing the right Institute. Several points need to be considered before choosing the right Institute.

Location: For MBA students, exposure is very crucial. IIM Rohtak being situated in NCR, has the location advantage of providing industrial exposure, thereby enabling students to learn and grow. Such a locational advantage also allows many eminent industry experts to visit the campus and conduct guest lectures which maximize exposure.
Peer: One of the major highlights of an MBA program is the social bonds you develop with your peers and seniors that stay with you throughout your career. IIM Rohtak has the best peer pool one could ask for.
Placements: Most of the new IIMs have similar placement statistics. But the uniqueness of IIM Rohtak lies in the fact that it is one of those very few colleges across the country, which follow IPRS standards and is audited by CRISIL, thus the authenticity of the report cannot be questioned.
Newly appointed director: The new director Prof Dheeraj Sharma has made fast-paced changes right from the beginning. He has sped up the construction work, hired new faculties, and launched a few new courses.
Infrastructure: The campus is large and enthralling spread across 650 acres MDU campus with facilities such as a sports complex, swimming pool, Bloomberg lab etc.
Extracurriculars: Yearly events and summits are held to keep the students active and immersed in various co-curricular activities.

Overall, the ambiance at IIM Rohtak is very promising and I would choose it over any new IIM.

Among these IIMs, IIM Shillong is the best option. Being an older institute it offers better course content, faculty, placements, extra-curricular and industry connections. It has a beautiful campus well-equipped with good facilities.

The institute has a great placement record. For the 2022 batch, IIM Shillong placements had an average CTC of INR 23.10 LPA. While the median CTC was INR 22.28 LPA.

Your preference order for these institutes should be IIM Shillong>IIM Ranchi>IIM Rohtak.

The decision depends on what you are looking for, in your MBA. At present, IIM Ranchi is the 2nd fastest growing new IIMs after IIM Trichy. IIM Ranchi is better than IIM Shilong and IIM Rohtak. Although IIM Ranchi has its fair share of shortcomings.

IIM Shillong:

IIM Shillong has the most beautiful campus but it has a locational disadvantage. The placements and faculty quality suffer due to bad connectivity.
Almost all the faculty at the institute are only from the northeast and Bengal regions.
Due to the bad placement, many students of IIM Ranchi and Trichy refused converts from IIM Shilong.

In the next few years, IIM Shillong will have difficulty in attracting students with present quality.

IIM Ranchi:

The way it looks, IIM Ranchi will have its new campus which will be available in 7–10 years.
IIM Ranchi does not give the real IIM experience as the accommodation is far away from the college, students have to travel for nearly an hour each day by bus. Also, these are just buildings with no college atmosphere, no real campus to live in with the faculty, no library, playgrounds is at Khelgaon which are not operational through the day and night, etc.

Even though it is the second-fastest-growing IIM, there’s a vast gap between IIM Trichy and IIM Ranchi.

IIM Rohtak:

IIM Rohtak also has a locational disadvantage. It used to be in the top 2 new IIM and it has moved far down, in the bottom 3.
No one, who has an idea about IIMs will ever recommend IIM Rohtak over the other new IIM. With the new director, things may improve but the IIMs will have also progressed by then.

All the institutes have their own disadvantages. Among the IIMs mentioned in the question, IIM Ranchi is a better alternative.
