The selection for IES officer depends upon three stages i.e. Prelims, Main, and Interview.

Prelims-Stage:

It is the first stage in the form of a written examination. There are 2 objective papers here.

  • General Studies & Engineering Aptitude: Marks- 200, Duration- 2 hours.
  • Technical Paper (CSE/ ME/ EE/ ECE): Marks- 300, Duration- 3 hours.
  • To hit the stump at prelims-stage, you need to clear the cut-offs. For this, you need at least 15% marks in each paper and target an aggregate mark of 250+.

Mains-Stage:

Here, the exam has two conventional papers: (as per the engineering field).

  • Paper-I (CSE/ ME/ EE/ ECE)- Marks- 300, Duration- 3 Hours
  • Paper-II (CSE/ ME/ EE/ ECE)- Marks- 300, Duration- 3 Hours
  • To clear the cut-offs at Mains-Stage, you need to score at 20% marks in each paper and hit the overall marks of 300+.

Personal Interview-Stage:

  • Here out of the total score of 200, the average score to get selected is 100-120 but your target should be 140+.
  • The interview is conducted by a panel of 3-4 experts who are usually retired officers. The panel is headed by a chairman.

Out of the aggregate score of 1300, the top 10 rankers usually score around 60-65% of the aggregate.

Tentative Timetable:

  • Notification: 3 months before Prelims (September end or 1st week of October)
  • Prelims: 1st or 2nd Sunday of January
  • Prelims Result: 3rd week of February
  • Mains: 3rd week of May
  • Mains result: End of August
  • Personal Interview: 1st week of October to mid - November
  • Final Result: 2 weeks from the last interview date.

The final selected candidates undergo medical fitness tests and thereafter are issued the appointment letter.
