The validity of GATE scores or GATE ranks varies depending on the purpose for which they are being used. Here are the different scenarios:

  • GATE score for M.Tech/M.E./Ph.D. admissions: GATE scores are valid for three years from the date of announcement of results.
  • GATE score for PSU recruitments: Generally, most Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) accept GATE scores that are not older than three years. However, this may vary from PSU to PSU, so candidates are advised to check the respective PSU's recruitment notification for the exact validity period.
  • GATE score for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF): GATE scores are valid for up to three years from the date of announcement of results for JRF/SRF.

It is important to note that GATE scores and GATE ranks are two different things. While GATE scores are used for admissions and recruitment purposes, GATE ranks are used for determining the eligibility for scholarships and fellowships offered by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The validity of GATE ranks is also three years from the date of announcement of results.

Since 2014, students appearing for GATE can use their scorecards that will be relevant for the next three years from the date of issue. While the rank is relevant for three years, it can be used only to apply for MTech programs and is not valid for PSU.

  • For PSU jobs students will have to clear the GATE exam and apply within the same year to be considered for the recruitment process.

  • With your GATE scorecards students can apply to IIT, NIT, IIIT, or any other state-level institution in order to get admissions for MTech, MS, or ME programs, depending on the branch applied for.

  • Being one of the most popular examinations for Master’s programs, the applications are competitive and results vary every year.

  • The ranking is based on the highest performing student and students are only allowed to take up GATE examinations once every year.

Registrations for the test can be done online and usually begin in the month of September. The exam is conducted every year in the month of February and students will have access to their results in the last week of March. It is important to qualify for GATE to get admissions at any MHRD supported university.

Therefore, students appearing for GATE can use their relevant scores for the next three years from the date of results. However, for PSU jobs, you will need that year’s GATE score.
