Before we discuss the benefits of doing minor in IIT, let’s get a clear picture of what exactly a minor is. Minors are electives chosen by people who are interested in pursuing research in any particular field of interest in postgraduate education. This particular elective is usually not a part of the major and hence it is called a minor.

For instance, if you belong to the Department of mechanical engineering but are willing to conduct some research in computer science in postgraduate education, then a minor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a good option.

Some rules pertaining to selecting a minor in your discipline, RS follows discipline:

  • The department would release a list of subjects from its curriculum and prescribe a requirement for minors taking six subjects (18-24 contact hours plus 3-9 hours of laboratory) from this list. This list includes the right blend of core and electives.
  • If a student of another discipline in course of his/her studies registers in a set of subjects that constitute the requirement for a minor, passes in all of these subjects, and scores a minimum grade point average of 6.00 then he/she earns a minor in IIT Kharagpur 6 Regulations: Undergraduate Programme that discipline.
  • A student may cover these six subjects as either a depth subject, a breadth subject, or as additional credits. However, he/she has to take at least three subjects as additional credits to earn a minor.
  • The opportunity of acquiring additional credits and minor would be available to the students of all degrees and disciplines. In the case of students of the dual degree program requirements for earning a minor have to be fulfilled within the 8th semester.
  • Except for the students of Dual Degree, all others students enrolled under 5-Year courses, like Integrated Page on M. and B.Arch. (Hons.) be permitted to pursue minors in other disciplines/branches offered by other departments/Centre in disciplines like Engineering and Science up to their 10th Semester.

Steps to get a minor are as follows

  • Registration for minors takes place in the beginning of the fifth semester.
  • The students must necessarily have 8+ CGPA by the end of the fourth semester. This is possible by completing all the credits and having zero backlogs.
