How good is the internet connection at NIT, Calicut? Are there any restrictions?

According to some of my friends studying at NIT Calicut, the internet service there is very good. But there are also some things you have to keep in mind about the internet usage, before getting admission in NIT Calicut. 

• The first year students get no access to internet connection in the hostel. 
• The students have to go to the Central Computing Center which is not far away from the hostel. 
• It is a 5 min walk from the first year hostel.
• Students get internet connection from the second year. 
• The students access internet connection in NIT Calicut through an extensive fiber optic network spread over the whole campus. 
• A total of 21 kilometers of optic fiber cable backboned with 50 routed internal networks. 
• The connection is through 200 Mbps leased line connection from Reliance and BSNL.
• Students get around 10 Mbps which is pretty decent speed and enough for the student to either watch something or play online games. 

As for the restrictions, torrents are restricted through an Internet Firewall Company named Fortiguard which is an excellent Internet Firewall. Some students use tunneling to use NIT Calicut’s internal server named Athena which is much faster than the LAN connection. For login you need a username and password provided by a CSE student.
