Should I take up IIT Kanpur Biological Sciences and Bioengineering and then try for a branch change?

UG
Ujwala Gour Posted On : April 22nd, 2023

Most students join IITs with the mindset of changing their branch to a more preferred one after the first year. But in reality, once you come here you will realize that branch hardly matters here. This is because most students, especially those with no specific area of interest, which seems to be your case too, tend to go for non-core jobs for which the branch does not matter. What matters is your CPI and your overall profile and achievements.

Those adamant about changing their branch can avail of the facility easily. The branch change depends on 2 factors, your CGPA and the availability of seats in the branch you want to get changed into.

  • For Civil, Material Science, Aerospace, and Physics, you need a CGPA of around 6.5–7.5
  • For Economics, Mathematics Scientific Computing, Chemical, and Mechanical you need a CGPA of around 7.5–8.5
  • For Mechanical or Electrical, you need an 8.6+ CGPA
  • For CS, you will need nothing less than a 10 CGPA in both the semesters

Honestly, it’s almost impossible to get a branch change into top branches like Mech, Electrical, or CSE. The chances are rare but worth trying. Most companies consider students from all the departments for placements. So, IIT Kanpur is a good option whether you want a branch change or not.

How good is Amity University Noida for B.Tech in Bioinformatics?

VS
Vijay Singh Posted On : April 13th, 2021
Studied at Amity University

I have one of my friends studying B.Tech from Amity University Noida. Here are the following points which will help you in making a decision.

  • Faculty: Amity University faculty is not good. The university does not have skilled and professional professors. Their teaching method is also not up to the mark. It lacks in providing practical knowledge to students.
  • Placement: The Bio department of Amity University is not good and at least 90% of its students are still unplaced.
  • Infrastructure: Amity University has a great infrastructure facility.
  • Attendance: The Amity University has 75% mandatory attendance for all students and departments.

Therefore, Amity University may not be a good option for taking admission. As everything shown in brochures and pamphlets might be misleading. The ranking of the college and universities have nothing to do with its education and placement. So, before taking admission do your own research and find a suitable college according to that.

Is Vignan University, Guntur a good college for a B.Tech in bioinformatics or a B.Tech in biotech? How good are the placements and scope for higher studies abroad?

B.Sc from Vignan University

All the private universities in India, except maybe 2–3, are trying their level best to establish themselves and Vignan is no exception. If you are considering joining the university then you should know the following.

  • Fees are high so plan well before joining. For a 4-year long B.Tech, the total course fee is around 9 lakhs.
  • Second, the syllabus keeps getting updated each year. This makes covering the syllabus, a bit tricky.
  • The same faculty will set the question paper so I think getting through with good grades won't be an issue.

Finally, you should join biotech only if you wish to study MS abroad. Otherwise, don’t join the institute.
