Naturally, BITS Goa and Hyderabad weren’t planned randomly. There are years of strategic planning behind the establishment of these campuses.
I learned from one of the faculties of BITS Pilani that the late Mr. K. K Birla wanted to expand BITS campuses way back in 1990s and assigned the task to the administration to find a suitable location for the second campus. During the tech boom of the 90s, IT companies were setting up shops everywhere in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai. They strategically choose Goa as it is between these two locations and well-connected because of its airport. The location also helped them attract faculties from IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore. Mr. Monahar Parrikar, then CM approved the project quickly, and that’s how it was possible to set up the Goa campus so quickly.
The Hyderabad campus also has a similar story. Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu, the CM of united Andra Pradesh back then, requested BITS to set up a campus in Hyderabad. He provided land for the campus and construction work was quick to follow. When the first batch joined in 20008, the infrastructure was already done.
In my opinion, if you aren’t certain of your career prospects and don’t have the luxury to spend a hefty amount, go for a government-funded institute over BITS.
Additionally, India as a whole has fewer job profiles in the core sector so it’s illogical to pay such hefty fees for a degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical at BITS.
But if you are inclined towards CS then taking a loan might be a good option considering the high packages offered in this branch. BITS dual degree programs are also in high demand these days. BITS has many merit-cum-need scholarships for students from weak financial backgrounds that are provided on the basis of grades and family income.
Ultimately, you should consider BITS if you can afford it and for CS or dual degree programs only.
BITS Pilani Hyderabad has decently constructed hostels with all basic amenities. The majority of students get single rooms while BTech first-year students get double occupancy rooms sometimes.
Adequate cleanliness is maintained and washrooms have hygienic conditions. You will find muddy water because of the recycling water system. As for the drinking water, you will get both hot and cold drinking water.
A typical room inside the BITS Pilani Hyderabad hostel comprises basic commodities such as a bed, a chair, a table, a whiteboard, a big cupboard, and storage space. Students get access to 2 charging points one near their bed and the other news to their study table in addition to one LAN port. BITS Pilani hostels are not air-conditioned but you will adapt yourself to the heat pretty soon. For reference, I am attaching a picture of my friend's room in the Ganga Bhavan hostel.
BITS Hyderabad is the newest out of the four BITS campuses. Established in 2008, it is accredited ‘A’ grade by NAAC. The college offers nearly 40 courses including Computer Science, Physics, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, and other major courses. Now let’s review the college on different aspects-
Infrastructure- The campus, being the newest boasts of well-furnished classrooms, modern laboratory equipment, a library, auditorium, activity center for students, and major facilities that make the campus a well-equipped one, and the scenic beauty of the area is the best sight on the campus.
Academics- Most of the reviews are positive for the faculty of the college and most of them are Ph.D. holders. The students are given the convenience of choosing the courses as per their need and are free to set their own time-tables, and there is a Zero attendance policy which allows the student to only attend classes they find suitable to their interests. There are a variety of elective courses available for the students to choose from which provides the versatility of options for them.
Fee Structure- BITS is a private institute, so it is expected to have a higher course fee and therefore it may not be in the list of many aspirants because obviously not everyone can afford such a high fee.
Placements- As per the 2016-18 data, around 94% of the total students get placed every year. The maximum salary offered has been 14LPA, 3.6LPA being the minimum, and 5LPA being the average. Around 200 companies visit the college every year for recruiting the students. IBM, ICICI, Ola, TCS, Intel, Flipkart, Facebook, KPMG, L&T, Amazon, and many more are some of the top recruiters in the college.
BITS Hyderabad is definitely better than VIT Vellore for CS. Here are some reasons for the same-
Thus, I would recommend you choose BITS Hyderabad for your B.E. in CS.
There are several parameters on which one can compare BITS Hyderabad/Goa with the new IITs. Some of them are-
The decision is yours, but you won’t regret choosing any of these colleges.
Here are a few reasons that justify BITS Pilani Hyderbad has a Tier-1 status:
That being said, BITS Pilani Hyderabad is rightly a tier-1 college.
Rather than focusing on the institutes, it’s best to give importance to your branch. I know a friend who gave up on BITS Hyderabad Mechanical production for core Mechanical at VIT. When I asked her the reason she told me that for her it was the branch that mattered more and VIT offered the branch of her choice.
So I will advise you to do the same. Analyze where your interests lie and choose the institute accordingly.
Here we are comparing a public institute with a private one, and therefore there will be areas in which IIT-H will hold a better rating than BITS-H and vice versa. Let’s see how both the colleges perform on various aspects-
NIRF Rankings- As per latest NIRF rankings, IIT Hyderabad has been ranked as the 8th best engineering college in India and the 22nd overall. While BITS Hyderabad has been ranked 30th for engineering and 27th overall.
Course Fee- IIT Hyderabad has comparatively lower fees for its courses than BITS-H, which is one of the benefits of a public institute and a private institute normally charges a high fee for its courses.
Infrastructure- BITS Hyderabad is the newest BITS Pilani campus and therefore provides well-furnished classrooms, modern laboratory equipment, and is a well-equipped one. While IIT Hyderabad also being a relatively newer IIT has good infrastructural facilities, but BITS-H definitely holds a stronger position in this aspect.
Placements-
IIT-H: As per the latest placement data of IIT-H, in 2020 the highest package received was 60.41LPA and the second phase is yet to be completed. IN 2018-19, IIT-H recorded the highest package of 53.80LPA and an average package of 18LPA. Some of the major companies visiting the college are Accenture, Bank Of America, ISRO, Qualcomm, Infosys, Cap Gemini, Amazon, and many more.
BITS-H: As per the 2016-18 data, around 94% of the total students get placed every year.
So, both the colleges have advantage over the other in some aspects but both are good and well-recognised institutes of the country. An admission in any of the two would not be a bad investment and you should make your choice as per your suitability and resources.
