CSE at NIT Hamirpur, IIIT Jabalpur, NIT Jalandhar, and IIIT Kancheepuram.
ECE at NIT Hamirpur, ECE at NIT Jalandhar, IIIT Kancheepuram, and then IIIT Jabalpur.
Choose a college with a broadband internet connection in the hostels for CSE. In general, the faculty at all of these colleges will be mediocre, and you will be forced to rely on the internet for your education. Cons
- The number of faculty members is low and the majority of them are not interested in teaching.
- Not many CS companies visit the campus for placements and most companies from the IT sector visit.
- Students aren’t offered any kind of industrial exposure.
- There aren’t any student projects, and only bookish knowledge is given preference.
However, being a CSE student at NIT Hamirpur is certainly a privilege given the fact that they have the maximum free time and also the best placement record.

How is hostel life in NIT Hamirpur?
Hostel life at NIT Hamirpur is similar to that of any other college. Since my brother recently passed out from NIT Hamirpur, I have a better idea of this.
- The students change their hostel rooms after every year so your roommates also change 4 times.
- The serene surrounding areas make the campus a peaceful place to stay. You will always be in awe of the beauty of the campus.
- The hostel has rigid restrictions on in-timing. During the initial semester girls and boys are expected to reach the hostel quite early. From the second semester, there are a few relaxations, especially for the boys.
- There are indoor game facilities like table tennis and badminton courts. There is also a pool table in the Neelkanth Boys Hostel for third-year boys. Also, there is a Common TV room where students gather to watch matches together.
- Students can be seen walking around at night or enjoying the sunrise at OAT.
- Many talented students portray their skills at night performing for everyone. Celebrations like birthdays, festivals, and the World Cup become much better with friends.
- There are enough eateries for both girls and boys. Girls have canteens in their hostels while boys have Nescafe which runs till 2 am. There are many eating spots in and around the campus like Juice bar, Nescafe, Amul, HPMC shop, Ekta, Junction, etc
- Students occasionally plan trips to nearby areas like Shimla, Kullu-Manali, Dharamshala, Treks, and many more.
- The best part of hostel life is indeed the last-minute group studies a day before your exams.
The facilities and rooms do not define the quality of your hostel life but the friends you make there do!
How can I reach NIT Hamirpur?
There are three modes of transport to reach NIT Hamirpur, the road link, rail link, and air link. However, one needs to reach Delhi first.
Road Link:
- Reach the ISBT KASHMIRI Gate Bus stand and get on a bus to Hamirpur. In case no direct buses are available, get on any bus going to UNA or CHANDIGARH.
- Go for bus services like HRTC, Punjab Bus Road Corporation, and Haryana Bus instead of private ones that are expensive.
- You can also book your tickets in advance through a bus ticket booking app.
Railway Link:
- Sadly, Hamirpur has no railway connectivity and the nearest broad gauge train head is at Una, at a distance of 72 Km from Hamirpur.
- You can reach Una from Delhi via two trains (Himachal Express (14553)& Jan Shatabdi (12057)). It takes around 10 hours. These run between UNA HIMACHAL (UHL) and DELHI(DLI) throughout the week.
- One can go to and from Hamirpur and Una via Bus or Taxi.
Air Link
- The nearest airport is at Dharamshala which is about 75 Kms from Hamirpur.
- Air India and Spicejet fly between Delhi and Gaggal daily. Additionally, there are regular flights up to Chandigarh, which is about 200 KM from Hamirpur.

The choice of the branch is more important than choosing the institute because it determines and shapes your career. If you are interested in working in a PSU or have an interest in Electronics, choose ECE but if you have no such inclinations choose CS, the most diverse field. There are two main differences between IIITs and NITs
- IIITs are relatively new and may not have a very extensive alumni network while NITs are aged old and have an elaborate network.
- NITs provide diverse specialization in various fields while IIITs only focus on Computer Science education.
Based on the placement scenario and the academics, here is the preference order I would suggest you follow while making your choice
NIT Jalandhar CSE>IIIT Jabalpur CSE>NIT Raipur CSE>NIT Kurukshetra ECE>NIT Hamirpur ECE> NIT Jamshedpur ECE

Which is better, NIT Kurukshetra or NIT Hamirpur?
I have a few friends in both institutes and from what I heard from them, NIT Kurukshetra is much better than NIT Hamirpur. Here are some obvious reasons for the same
- Placements: NIT Kurukshetra's placement scenario is better than NIT Hamirpur's. Last year, its average package and highest package stood at INR 13.89 LPA and INR 1.25 CPA respectively while NIT Hamirpur's average package and highest package in 2023 stood at INR 12.83 LPA and INR 52 LPA respectively.
- Alumni : NIT Kurukshetra has a better and stronger alumni network than NIT Hamirpur. Some of the noticeable alumni that hold high positions are R. K. Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, WAPCOS, Rajeev Kapoor, CEO, of Fiat India Automobile Private, and P. K. Munjal, MD, Hero Honda.
- Location: NIT Kurukshetra has more location advantages as it’s near both Chandigarh as well as Delhi. Students thereby have access to coaching institutes where they can prepare for competitive exams.
- Faculty: The faculty pool is more or less the same in both institutes.
- Rankings: NIT Hamirpur is ranked 23 for B.Arch and 99 for Engineering by the NIRF 2021 rankings while NIT Kurukshetra B.Tech ranking by NIRF is 58 out of 200 colleges in 2023 and it was 50 out of 300 colleges in 2022
- City: NIT Hamirpur is a far more beautiful city than Kurukshe and also has more places to explore than Kurukshetra.
- Infrastructure : Both buildings have been designed beautifully and have beautiful campuses. NIT Hamirpur has slightly better infrastructure than NIT Kurukshetra.
- Food: NIT Hamirpur has more options for non-veg than NIT Kurukshetra where mainly veg cuisine is served.

Is Hamirpur a very cold place? Should I take climate into account before joining NIT Hamirpur or IIIT Una?
No, NIT Hamirpur is not a very cold place. Its surrounding area of snow-clad mighty Dhauladhars might give the impression that it's extremely cold here but in reality, there isn't any snowfall. This is because the campus is situated approximately 4km from the main town and is at a higher elevation.
The climate here is very pleasant and the vegetation is also impressive. Even during the hottest days, the temperature does not go beyond 27°C). During winters, the temperature ranges between 16-18°C, and it is mostly sunny outside. However, if you are from the Northern area of India, you might find the winters in even semesters (January) very cold. Winter is followed by spring, one of the best times of the year. Most of the summer days are spent on holidays so that isn't a big problem.
Overall, the winter season at NIT Hamirpur does not ring in extreme weather conditions and the cold climate is usually bearable. You can pack accordingly after considering the weather conditions throughout the year.
Which is better EEE at NIT Raipur or BIT Mesra or NIT Hamirpur?
When I asked a senior of mine the same question, she told me to exclude NIT Raipur. The reason is, NIT Raipur is one of the newer institutes and to be considered worthy, the institute has to improve a lot.
The other two institutes, however, would be a tough call.
My senior said BIT Mesra is slightly ahead of NIT Hamirpur just because the former has been around for much longer than the latter.
Despite all that, NIT Hamirpur is located in pleasant surroundings. In addition to that, it will also give you the NIT tag and is an INI. So, in the case of comparison by merit, it all depends on who has the higher cut-off in a particular session.
NIT Hamirpur is also a new NIT and it is improving with each day. On the other hand, the quality of education, placements in the electrical branch of NIT Raipur are going down with each passing day.
