Although IIM Ahmedabad is not the best HR campus, it is the best in its class. Furthermore, it is believed that the 'Specialization' thing should not be dependent on the institute, but rather on what a person sees their career as being in. Choose wisely, regardless of the institute, because you will have to live with it for many years.

IIM Ahmedabad does not offer an HR specialization. However, you can always add more HR electives to your PGP program in the second year to help your cause. If you are certain that you want to work in human resources, apply to XLRI or TISS. They offer the best HRM education in India.

IIM Ahmedabad doesn’t provide any specialization. In PGP1, you would be taught courses for all functions such as Marketing, Finance, Operations, and Human Resources. In PGP2, you have the option to choose your courses depending upon your interests. So, if you want to do a specialization in any field, you have the option to enroll for courses in that area in PGP2.

One of my friends got inspired by his professors and ended up having an interest in the HR field. Although he changed his field later, he had interned in HR. Going by his words, he liked the experience during that project.

Here a few of the factors you should factor in if you are considering HR specialization.

  • You are interested in the field - Go for HR only if you like the field. You have got to deal with people, a lot of mundane stuff initially. Moreover, not every corporation or firm values its HR department.
  • You are willing to struggle - The institution doesn’t have many companies which come for the HR roles. The initial years of the job might be toiling but this is one such department in which you have a lot of opportunities for growth after a few years. Many renowned people have given Alum talks in the institute.
  • You are willing to settle for less than a CEO tag in the future - HR field seems to be a remunerative career option. You might not be getting that CEO role or even the most important role in the future. You have the chances of being the 2nd or 3rd most important person in the company but not the 1st.

Having said that, if you have already decided that you want to go in the HR field only, then the IIMA tag would only help you. If not, you should definitely give a second thought to your decision.
