IITs are known for having smaller batch sizes. However, the finance placements at IIT Delhi may be subdued due to the institute's focus on operations and technology. It is worth noting that both IIT Delhi and IIM Shillong have competitive placements and have not yet grown their batches to the point where this becomes a concern. IIM Shillong has strong finance placements, including ICICI Bank, which is a well-regarded employer for MBA graduates.

It is difficult to compare the two institutes as they both have their own strengths and advantages. IIT Delhi has a long history and its DMS programs are well-established in the industry. If a student is considering IIT Delhi and has concerns about the college's focus on investment banking, it is important to note that this career path is not heavily dependent on starting placements and individuals can be self-reliant in building their careers. IIT Delhi is likely to continue growing and expanding in the future, and IIM Shillong is well-positioned among the newer IIMs in RRRTUCS. It will also continue to build its research and faculty strength, particularly after it gets a new campus.

Location is a factor to consider when choosing between the two institutes. IIT Delhi is located in urban New Delhi, which may be an advantage for some students. However, it is worth noting that the lack of investment in MBA programs at IITs, including Delhi, could become a problem in the long term as the field requires significant expenses in faculty, coursework, and programs to remain competitive. Currently, IIT Delhi is ahead of the newer IIMs, particularly if a student is interested in a consulting placement straight out of school.

Studied MBA in HR, Indian Institute of Management Lucknow

One of my friends is an alumnus of IIT Delhi and he has often told me about its advantages of doing an MBA. When compared with IIM Shillong for the MBA program IIT Delhi takes the lead due to the following reasons:

Placements:

  • IIM Shillong offers great placement opportunities for Finance. ICICI Bank has recruited students from the institute and provided a great career for MBA graduates.
  • However, IIT Delhi and IIM Shillong both offer competitive placement opportunities for the students.
  • Small batch size and location advantage works in the favor of IIT Delhi and has marginally better roles and a high average and median salary for the batch of 2020.
  • If you are interested in Investment Banking then it is important to note that any institute has nothing to do with the placement package. You can easily become self-reliant to start a career.

Tabulated below are the placement statistics of both institutions:

Institute

Batch Size

No. of offers

Highest Package

Average Package

Median Package

IIT Delhi

68

83

33 LPA

22.69 LPA

20.01 LPA

IIM Shillong

170

185

48.5 LPA

18.76 LPA

17 LPA

Location Advantage:

  • IIT Delhi hands down take the lead when it comes to this aspect over IIM Shillong.
  • It is ahead of all new IIMs especially if you are interested in a career in Consulting.

Batch Size:

  • When it comes to batch size IIT Delhi has a batch of 120 students whereas IIIM Shillong has a batch size of 180 students.
  • Smaller batch size means more opportunities for the students to choose better opportunities in placements and also ensures better interaction with the faculty.
  • Considering these facts IIT Delhi has a slight lead over IIM Shillong

Alumni Base:

  • IIT Delhi’s DMS was established way before IIM Shillong and has built a strong reputation for itself over these years.
  • This means IIT Delhi enjoys a much rich and diverse alumni base that is a huge positive for the institution.

Considering all these factors it is clear that IIT Delhi is better at providing more opportunities when compared to IIM Shillong, and is the better of the two.
