The IIFT admission process typically consists of three stages:

  • The written exam
  • The Group Discussion (GD) and Essay Writing
  • The Personal Interview (PI)

Here's what you can expect in the Essay Writing and GD-PI stages:

  • Essay Writing: The essay writing round typically involves writing an essay on a given topic within a given time frame. The topics may cover a wide range of subjects such as current affairs, social issues, economics, or international trade. The purpose of this round is to assess your ability to articulate your thoughts clearly, coherently, and concisely, as well as your analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Group Discussion (GD): In this round, a group of candidates is given a topic to discuss. The topics may cover a wide range of subjects such as current affairs, social issues, economics, or international trade. The purpose of this round is to assess your ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively with others, and present your ideas convincingly.
  • Personal Interview (PI): The Personal Interview round typically involves a one-on-one conversation with an interviewer. The interview is designed to assess your personality, interests, and motivations, as well as your knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.

To prepare for these rounds, it is important to stay updated on current events, develop your communication skills, practice critical thinking and analysis, and have a thorough understanding of international trade and business. Additionally, practicing mock GDs and essays, and seeking feedback from peers and mentors can help you prepare effectively for these rounds.

By strategic and systematic practice you can easily score well in the essay writing part of GD-PI at IIFT.

Essay writing-

  • In this round, the student is provided with a topic, most likely related to current world trends. Then, he/she is allotted a total time of 20 minutes- 5 minutes to ponder and 15 minutes to write it down.
  • There is no constricted rulebook for the subject of the topics. It can be picked up from any sphere or stream. As it is a foreign trade institute, the students can expect topics related to economics, trade, commerce, etc. On top of that politics, society, history-related topics can also be asked of students. You should possess sound knowledge of as many areas-of-study as possible.
  • For example, in 2019 the essay topic was –“Are domestic animals man’s best friends?”

GD-

  • The conducting process of GD in IIFT differs from the procedure followed in other business institutes. Each student is assigned a common topic with a few spare minutes to prepare themselves.
  • Once the preparation time is up, you are expected to give an introduction to the topic for a minute or two. First, you should set up the framework of your presentation. So, later, you can swiftly glide into a brief explanation of the topic.
  • This one minute is your only window to create an impression on the interviewers because there is no certainty about the group discussion session.
  • After the introduction session, the floor is opened for group discussion. This GD lasts for about 30 minutes.
  • Last year's GD topic was – “Should India cut down the package for economic stimulus?”

Interview -

  • This is the toughest round. The interviewers will have your CV and their questions will be directed following the data mentioned in the CV. Therefore, be as authentic as possible. Avoid any kind of fake entry.
  • The first set of questions asked by the interviewer revolve around a student’s hobbies, ethics, etc.
  • The next set of questions asked are mostly along the lines of “Tell me more about yourself?”, “Why MBA?”, “Why engineering?”, “Why IIFT?” etc. You should try to give interesting and authentic answers.
  • Read information about IIFT as an institute, the courses offered, the appointed clubs, etc. beforehand.
  • Questions about current affairs and general knowledge are also asked during the interview.

These are the type of questions a student can expect during his/her GD, PI, and essay writing.
