One of my friends is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Neurophysiology at NIMHANS. As per the information he shared, the department has 8 faculties. Only 4 students can enroll under one professor for a Ph.D. The batch size is around 50 per batch every year.

The duration of the coursework is 6 months which is centralized. PhD students are exposed to a wide range of topics in the field of neuroscience. The theoretical knowledge imparted is only basic just to give an idea of the field and no topic-specific modules are taught. One will get exposed to the basics of research methodology.

Once the coursework comes to an end, students are supposed to choose their guides and start working on a specific topic for the Ph.D. Other learning modules include classroom discussions, writing up Ph.D. protocol to get feedback, and techniques required for the Ph.D. work. I have seen many MPhil students returning for a PhD program in the Department of Neurophysiology.

The Department of Neurophysiology offers a 2 year MPhil program. Usually, students of MPhil pursue the same topic for their PhD. One seminar and one journal club presentation are conducted every week.

Overall, the course is well-structured and renders enough freedom to do the research work. You can also consider taking online courses in statistics and signal processing if you are interested in research work.
