I am a doctor at CMC Vellore, and I have been practicing in CMC for 5 years. Certain factors make CMC Vellore an ideal place to get your medical training from.

Here are some advantages of working as a doctor at CMC-

  1. The CMC Vellore staff is highly disciplined (right from the cleaning staff to the director of the institute).
  2. CMC follows World class treatment protocols that are updated regularly. The CMC faculty regularly visits foreign medical institutes, and foreign faculty is frequently invited to CMC.
  3. The professors make sure to teach moral values to their students. Official discussions on moral and ethical values are held each week.
  4. There is excellent cooperation among doctors of different departments, and one gets round the clock support from each and every doctor (even if they are not on duty).
  5. At CMC, all the patient reports can be accessed from any corner of the hospital. This saves a lot of the doctors’ time.
  6. Most of the doctors at CMC consider it their duty to look after each and every patient. The doctors work without ego, and carry a humble attitude.

Other than the advantages of working at CMC Vellore, here are some disadvantages of this institution-

  1. The huge workload can get extremely exhausting at times.
  2. Personal life suffers, and there’s no clear boundary line between personal and working hours.
  3. Academic discussions are limited during routine work. Most departments do not encourage questions on how a particular treatment evolved, and the possible future developments.
  4. Some departments are too overburdened to produce research work. Because of this, the amount of research publications is low in comparison to the high medical knowledge and patient load

Having said that, I wouldn’t deny that CMC still produces a phenomenal amount of quality research material.

  1. The waiting list is very long, especially for patients with cancer.

This is my experience of working as a doctor at CMC Vellore. Overall, I would say that CMC has offered me a rich and vast exposure in the field of medicine.

Working as a doctor for CMC Vellore is one in a kind experience. Like everything else, there are associated pros and cons for the same-

Advantages-

  1. Be it the cleaning staff or the Director of the institute, everyone here is disciplined and hardworking.
  2. The treatment protocols are world class, and are updated frequently.
  3. Official discussions on moral values and good behavior are held every week. Even senior professors are very mindful of their behavior towards the patients.
  4. There is good team work and round the clock support across departments.
  5. All reports can be accessed from any corner of the hospital. When getting a call for consultation, you would have already seen the patients’ reports. So you can formulate your plan of action in advance.
  6. The staff is very cooperative, everyone is treated with respect, and patient oriented decision making takes place.

Limitations-

  1. The work is exhausting. You won’t be given proper resting time if you fall sick due to overworking.
  2. Your personal life will suffer due to an extremely busy schedule.
  3. During routine work, limited academic discussions take place. Most departments don’t encourage asking questions like how a treatment evolved and what will be the future developments.
  4. The impetus to publish is relatively low for the amount of medical knowledge and patient availability.
  5. The waiting list is very long, especially for cancer patients.
  6. The staff tries to impose their religious belief on non Christian patients.

These are all the pros and cons of working as a doctor at CMC Vellore. Overall, the experience is unique and fulfilling.
