Which is better for studying architecture in India: SPA Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, or IIT Roorkee?
It is better to choose a college with an IIT tag because it will give you security regarding placements. IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee both have a good placement record, and their IIT tag makes them a better choice for Architecture students.
- The NIRF 2023 Ranking in Architecture of IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur is 1st and 3rd respectively, whereas the ranking of SPA Delhi is 5th.
- IITs offer a lot of facilities which aren’t offered by other top architecture colleges in India. They have extensive libraries, best sports facilities, clubs and societies, etc. If you like extracurriculars as much as studies, IIT Roorkee and IIT KGP will provide you with world-class facilities for the same.
- Apart from design and architecture, you’ll be able to study a host of other subjects and varied electives at IIT R and IIT KGP. This will place you in a much better position academically.
- Many new professors have joined the Architecture department at IIT Roorkee in the past few years. They are young and have a modern perspective which resonates with today’s youth.
- IIT Roorkee has the best and the biggest hostels compared to any other college, and everyone can avail a single room for the entire course duration. Every hostel room at IIT Roorkee has access to the fastest internet speed through LAN, without any limitations.

After considering all the factors, I would suggest you choose IIT Roorkee for your B.Arch. The next best option would be IIT Kharagpur.

I was in the same position as you last year. I too had the same options for my Bachelor in architecture and I chose IIT Kharagpur for to following reasons:-
- Faculty in IITs are more focussed on technical aspects and the demands of the institute in terms of the output are the same.
- IIT Kharagpur is ranked 3rd in the NIRF ranking, while IIT Roorkee is ranked 1st and SPA Delhi is ranked 5th.
- IIT Kharagpur has a Median Salary of 12.62 LPA with IIT Roorkee at 10 LPA and SPA Delhi at 6 LPA
- IIT Kharagpur has 40 total seats with a placement rate of 100%.
- At IIT Kharagpur you get to interact with the experts from different disciplines.
- I am in the Architecture and Planning department and interact with faculty of other departments for my thesis project.
- IITs have an edge in regard to placement.
- For strong research-oriented academics I would prefer IIT Kharagpur.

The choice of your institute depends on what you are expecting from it. For instance, if you are just after the brand name, then the IIT tag will come to your rescue. However, if you are on the lookout for quality education that will match your requirement to pursue a career in architecture, then SPA is a very good option. The only drawback is that there are no Institute placements and you need to have a good portfolio or Architectural background to get a good job.
If you are after placements, IIT Kharagpur and Roorkee can guarantee you very good packages, sometimes even in crores. The issue with this option is that you will have to first clear JEE Advanced and then AAT, after which only you can get admission.
