IIT KGP has been ranking among the top IITs for over a decade now. It is widely recognized globally. If you are planning on pursuing higher education overseas, doing your degree from IIT KGP can help you a lot. In fact, having a degree from IIT KGP gives you maximum leverage to choose whatever career path you want in engineering.

Although IIT BHU and IIT Roorkee became IITs later, there are very old institutes. Both BHU and Roorkee have immense respect in the academic world, all across the globe. But these two aren’t considered among the top 5 IITs when it comes to international reputation and career opportunities.

IIT Guwahati was established quite recently. But it has made an immense stride in this limited time period. The only downside for the institute is the limited alumni network and industry recognition.

When compared generally, the preference order of these institutes will be -

IIT KGP>IIT BHU=IITR>IITG

However, before choosing any of these institutes, you should consider your interest. Choose the best institute that you are getting for your branch of choice.

All of these institutes are among the creamy layer of the engineering colleges in our country if the NIRF rankings are followed the rankings should be as;

IITKGP (Rank 4) > IIT R (Rank 6) > IIT G (Rank 7) > IIT BHU (Rank 11)

The preference order would vary based on the objective of the student. While choosing a college, there might be various criteria that a student would see like Infrastructure, placements, faculty, proximity to hometown, etc. Of these four colleges, IIT KGP, IIT BHU, and IITR are reputed old institutes having a great alumni base and structure for the student’s benefit. IIT G is a comparably newer college that started in 1990, but it has grown well in a short span of time. Also, the student might choose the college based on the course of interest like aerospace engineering is famous in IIT KGP and IIT R is famous for its civil engineering course, and so on.

Taking into all these factors into account the rating would be as such:

IITKGP >> IITR > IIT BHU > IIT G

IITKGP gets the first rank as it is the oldest IIT and it has also been among the top five ranks of engineering institutes in India for more than 20 years till now. The research in the institute is top-notch with a great alumni network. Additionally, it has the best placement record of the rest three and also has amazing infrastructure and a huge campus (more than 2000 acres).

IITR gets the second rank as it has been among the top 10 engineering colleges in our country for more than two decades but the location of the institute is a big hindrance during the placement process, but still, its placements are on par with IIT BHU and its infrastructure is great but not as good as IIT KGP.

IIT BHU gets the third rank as it is a reputed institute which was converted into an IIT in the recent past. It has a similar placement record as IITR but the campus infrastructure is not par with the IIT R, such as the internet, library, and sports infrastructure. IITG is on a similar placement record with IIT R and IITG but it is on lesser ranks when compared to the other three due to lacking in the field of academics and infrastructure when compared to the rest.
