Yes, despite having IIM and NIT, Kozhikode residents prefer Mangalore for education. That could be due to Mangalore's studious-yet-stress-free environment.

That could be due to Mangalore's studious-yet-stress-free environment. People in Mangalore differ from the nerds at IIM, IIT, or NIT who are always studying. There's also a disciplined approach to life there. They eat when they need to, sleep when they are required to, study when they have to, and have fun when it is possible. Unlike the IIM nerds, who have no concept of fun or sleep and keep on studying even while doing other stuff.

To get into IIM or NIT, you must work extremely hard, as nearly 60% of the brightest students in India aspire to attend IIM/NIT. As a result, there is intense competition. The exam is entirely merit-based (in addition, seat reservations are aplenty).

Studied in IIM Kozhikode (2019)

Firstly, getting admission to an IIM or NIT is a difficult task for an average student. The entrance exams like CAT and AIEEE tend to incline on the harder side. If you get a chance to study in these institutions, leaving it for a college in Mangalore is not a smart choice.

You asked, Why are the students from the Malabar region (Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode) opting Mangalore for education? The main reason is the ease of getting admission in any stream of their choice.

Even though the cost of education is slightly higher in Mangalore than in Kerala, the options and opportunities are varied. 6 Medical colleges, an equal number of Dental colleges, 10+ Engineering colleges, Nursing, MBA, and Degree colleges.

Transportation and distance is another factor. Mangalore to Kozhikode is 4 hours by train. Many students are day scholars, especially from Kannur and Kasargod.

Also, the urban tag of Mangalore is another reason why both parents and students prefer this place.
