Here are some of the unique and lesser-known facts about IIT Madras.

• IIT Madras has one of the fastest supercomputers in India. TOP500, a global project ranked IBM Virgo Super Cluster of IIT Madras as the fasted supercomputer in the country. 
• The institute was established with the technological and financial support of the then Govt. of West Germany. 

There’s an unused railway track inside the campus. It is located behind the Machine Design section, towards the bordering wall of the institute. These are some of the unique bits about the campus.

The canteen located opposite the humanities and social sciences block which is known as the campus cafe has a weight checking machine.Usually, the weighing machine needs a coin to display the weight but this one is free. The machine tells you your exact weight and the amount of water that you need to drink as per your weight.

The irony is that most of the customers do not even notice the weighing machine let alone check their weight because the cafe is so busy and a lot of people cannot understand its purpose. It always shows advertisements about Vodafone and does not have a heading to attract people saying it is meant to check your weight.
