What is advisable, to join the PGDMM/PGDPM at NITIE or get a job?

KM
Krishna Mehar Posted On : August 20th, 2021
Studied MBA from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2013)

It's a subjective question and mostly depends on your profile. PGDMM would be advantageous, if you are a fresher, especially with a mechanical or manufacturing background. It is better in terms of securing a good profile, a good package (Avg. 12 LPA), and robust manufacturing domain command.

A few years of work experience would be preferable for the PGDPM course, but it is not required. It's a safe option to play for both freshmen and those with a little experience because it improves your profile, package, and adds the rich experience of a top MBA school - NITIE.

What is the scope of the new PGDMM course of NITIE as far as placements are concerned?

SR

NITIE Mumbai has a great placement record and you only need to maintain a good academic record to secure a good placement package. NITIE is known for running an industry focus curriculum and has a proven record for all courses as far as placement is concerned.

Back in 2014, NITIE started two new courses, i.e. Project Management and Manufacturing Management. Due to the Government’s focus on Make in India, there are ample opportunities in the sector of manufacturing management in the future.

Along with the other courses at NITIE, PGDMM also has a great placement rate. Students of PGDMM get placed in different sectors and are not necessarily limited to manufacturing.

Here are the recent placement highlights of NITIE.

Average CTC  20 LPA
Highest CTC  44 LPA
Major recruiters  ETLI, IDFC First, EY, etc.

PGDMM students get almost equal opportunities as any other branch.

How much do the top B-schools like the IIMs FMS, MDI, XLRI, SP JAIN, JBIMS, IIFT, and NITIE inflate their placement reports?

HP
Hardik Pandya Posted On : February 28th, 2023
MBA Finance, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi (2016)

In the placement process, it is not always the B-Schools that are responsible for reporting inflated packages, but rather the companies. The figure reported by placement cells is referred to as the "Cost to Company" (CTC) and not the take-home salary. This means that simply dividing the CTC by 12 is not an accurate reflection of what you will receive in your bank account each month.

CTC consists of two main components: fixed and variable. The fixed component includes your basic salary, HRA, TA, LTA, employer's contribution to the provident fund, joining bonus, retention bonuses, and ESOPs. The variable component is based on both your performance and the company's performance and is paid out in lump sums either yearly or half-yearly.

Your take-home salary at the end of each month is calculated as basic salary + HRA + TA + other allowances - provident fund deduction - tax. The remaining amount is given to you at the end of the year. To illustrate how companies may inflate their CTC figures, here are a few examples:

  • Amazon:

Fixed component: 9 lakhs

Year 1 end retention bonus: 2 lakhs

Year 2 end retention bonus: 1.5 lakhs

ESOP: 5 lakhs to be paid over 3 years

Performance bonus: separate/not reported CTC: 17.5 lakhs

Take-home salary: 65-70k

  • Goldman Sachs:

Fixed component + Variable component: 14.5 lakhs

Relocation: 2,00,000 INR (one-time payment)

Supplemental Salary: 3,50,000 INR (supplemental salary is an accrued bonus paid out in monthly installments pro-rated from the date of joining, only applicable during the first year of joining)

CTC: 20 lakhs

Take-home salary: 95-98k

  • RBS India Development Center (Royal Bank of Scotland back-end):

Fixed component: 9 lakhs

Variable component: 10-20% of a fixed component

CTC: 10.8 lakhs

Take-home salary: 65-68k

As seen from the examples, despite Amazon having a CTC that is double that of RBS IDC, their take-home salary is the same. This is the typical way it works. The placement teams likely do not have much control over the process.

Does NITIE Mumbai provide a stipend for a PG diploma in industrial engineering?

YS
Yaswashini Sharma Posted On : August 16th, 2021
PGDIE from NITIE (2019)

Yes, NITIE Mumbai offers an appropriate amount of monthly stipend (Teaching Assistantship, TA) to the students enrolled in the PGDIE courses of the institution. The amount offered depends upon the score obtained in the GATE examination by the candidate.

Nevertheless, every student enrolled in the PGDIE course of the institution receiving the stipend amount under the TA program has to perform certain tasks for around 8-10 hours per week related to the domain of teaching and research. You would also be required to complete the work assigned to you by the Institute.

You are required to obtain first-class or score an equivalent CGPA (or Grade) in the first and second semester examinations of the course, to be eligible for the continuation of the teaching assistantship for the following semesters.

TA would get temporarily discontinued once you start getting involved in an internship or an apprenticeship.

What is the minimum CAT percentile for an OBC candidate to get ADMITTED to NITIE?

VK
Vijay Kanchan Posted On : August 18th, 2021
Studied at NITIE Mumbai (2019)

As NITIE is a very reputed and popular college, the minimum CAT percentile required for admission is generally high. There are several factors that are considered before announcing the cut-off marks. These include - number of candidates applied for admission, the average performance of the candidates, availability of seats, etc.

  • The cut-off of CAT for OBC students is 75+, but it has now probably increased to 80.
  • It is better to aim for a higher percentile, around 80-85 so that the chances of getting admission are improved.
  • They give different weightage to CAT, GD, PI, 10th, 12th, and Graduation marks for the final merit list.
  • In NITIE, only 30% weightage is given to the CAT score for the final selection.
  • The major part of the selection is the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round in order to get admission to NITIE.

Hence, the cutoff marks of CAT are very high even for OBC students to get a call from this college. You will also have to clear the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round, which is a very important part to get admission to this college.

Why do people choose NITIE over IITs and PSUs?

PS
Pallak Shukla Posted On : August 13th, 2021
PGDIE from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2019)

One of the main reasons why NITIE is preferred over IITs and PSUs is that it provides placement at a higher package than any PSU.

  • The placements for PGDIE at NITIE is better than M.Tech Design (Mechanical) at IITB.
  • Though IITB is a huge brand in its own right, its M.Tech is not as lucrative as its B.Tech.
  • However, if one is interested in research, this is a different thing. Otherwise, NITIE has a significant advantage in this regard.
  • Furthermore, the average packages are comparable to those offered by any Maharatna PSU.
  • Secondly, having a degree from NITIE is always advantageous for growth in the private sector.
  • Third, NITIE has a large alumni base, which provides numerous opportunities and placement in large MNCs.

In the case of IITB, if the branch in question is CS, M.Tech is unquestionably superior, given the tremendous growth expected in this sector in the coming years.

How much chance to get admission in NITIE Mumbai after shortlisted for GD AND PI ?

KK
Kaya Kalaria Posted On : August 12th, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Industrial Engineering Mumbai (2019)

One of my friends graduated from NITIE. According to him, being shortlisted from NITIE depends on several factors. Let me share the ones I got to know about.

  • The most important factor is the GD and PI rounds.
  • PI generally has a greater weightage than GD.
  • Another important factor is your previous qualifications. If you have a great academic score overall in your 10th, 12th, and Graduation, you will then stand out among others.
  • These scores must be equivalent to getting 94 and above out of 100.
  • If you have 2-3 years of work experience, you will also be preferred among other candidates without work experience.

Keep a check on the waitlists. After the first-round selection, a lot of students tend to leave NITIE for other options. At this moment you can get selected.

How much will a low grad score affect summer and final placements in NITIE (PGDIM), SJMSOM IIT B, and XLRI BM?

JM
Jyoti Mishra Posted On : June 9th, 2021
Studied PGDBM Marketing & Operations Management, Xavier School of Management (2019)

My cousin is an alumnus of NITIE and has spent two years in the institute as a student. His opinion is based on professional experience and may not be true for summer and final placements at SJMSOM and XLRI.

  • Companies consider students with good grades as an equivalent proxy to dedication at the workplace, and the ability of the students to analyze critically and intensively.
  • The merit required for the consideration is open to question and/or debate. Marks obtained in high school and graduation usually serve as filter criteria for filtering out worthy students from hundreds of them.
  • Experience in work in domain and years or the lack of it and the college you completed your undergraduate degree from matter in a few cases.
  • It is wrong to say that one of these matters will nullify and get you a place in the shortlist for the subsequent selection rounds.

A counter-argument can turn up claiming that the companies do not look at the scores. It is up to the students concerned to follow this notion.
