If you are a Civil student, my advice to you would be to prepare for the GATE exam once you are done with your degree. The placement is quite low for core companies. Many students also follow the same.
Chemical students are known to focus on jobs and have a good placement in analytics and software-based companies. Many of the top ones also land core jobs.
My suggestion would be to check the syllabus and pick the subject you like. You will realize which subject has good scope and what does not. As far as Civil is concerned, most students land jobs at L&T. But, they will make you work a lot and you will not be satisfied with the pay. This is not the case with Chemical engineering.
Chemical Engineering and ECE, both the branches are in demand. The major scope of Chemical Engineering is in chemical, food processing, pharma, medical industries, oil, and gas, etc.
The major scope of ECE is in android, mobile, and telecommunication. The majority of the students prefer ECE because of two reasons. The first reason being comfort. Secondly, after acquiring skills in programming languages, it is easy to switch to the IT or software field.
Here is a brief overview of CE at NIT Calicut and ECE at IIIT Jabalpur.
Institute | NIT Calicut | IIIT Jabalpur |
Average CTC | 11 LPA | 9.9 LPA |
Highest CTC | 43 LPA | 23 LPA |
Major recruiters | CISCO, Bosch, TATA Group | IBM, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft |
Course fee | 2.08 lakhs | 5.29 lakhs |
If you don’t have any particular inclination towards any branch you can go for ECE at IIIT Jabalpur.
All of the institutions are well-recognized academic institutions in India. However, I think choosing IIT Bhubaneswar is better than going with chemical engineering at IIT BHU or CSE at NIT Rourkela.
Decide a branch that you prefer, after that go through the colleges of that particular branch. Pay attention to the college’s overall performance, placements, faculties, location, etc. as they are the major factors.

The scenarios may change in the coming future. It is important to talk to recently passed out students of these colleges to know the current scenarios before making the decision.
The Dharmsinh Desai University (DDU) ranks in the band of 101-150 by NIRF 2020. The faculty has more than 52 years of experience in education. It has both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Course Scope
A chemical Engineering graduate can work at a Petroleum Industry, Food Industry, Electronics Industry, Rubber Industry, Textile Industry, Paper and Pulp Industry, Aerospace Industry, Plastic Industry, Cement Industry, Public Sector Units and Fertilizer Industry.
The scope of Chemical Engineering is not as good as the other core engineering departments. Placements, both on-campus and off-campus are difficult to obtain. Though employment of chemical engineers is projected to grow 6% from 2018 to 2028, The Demand for chemical engineer’s are growing gradually.
ICT Mumbai is a better option for chemical engineering. A friend of mine recommended ICT Mumbai due to certain major reasons listed below:
Therefore, the final choice should be ICT Mumbai for pursuing chemical engineering. Here is a presentation of some of the factual information:
Particulars |
ICT Mumbai |
ISM Dhanbad |
Placement rate(2020) |
70% |
65% |
Average salary package (2020) |
>4.5LPA AND <16.5LPA |
>9LPA AND <43LPA |
Fee structure(2020) |
Rs. 85,350 (for the first year) |
Rs. 8,80,000 |
ICT Mumbai is better than ISM Dhanbad from every aspect. The faculty is well read and has ample domain knowledge. They try their level best to help students with their doubts. I hope the information provided above helps.
You can opt to enroll in BITS, Goa for Chemical Engineering only if you are positive to pursue your career in that field, or if you are simultaneously planning for any in-depth research activities in chemical engineering-related fields in the upcoming years.
However, the older IIITs are comparatively better in terms of providing the best of everything, than it is in the newer ones. But, if you are personally considering the branch, then CSE has always been ahead of the list in terms of placement opportunities as opposed to Chemical.
Why do you want to opt for engineering? Is it because you enjoy Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics? If that’s the reason, then there are two possibilities for you.
Joining IIIT Sri City for CSE-
Joining Chemical Engineering at MANIT Bhopal-
If you have no particular inclination, then choosing CSE may be better. As it has two domains, i.e. coding and non-coding. Plus, the internet is full of great ebooks and tutorials to teach you.
Considering the opportunities which may get available for you in the future, I would suggest you go for Chemical Engineering at NIT Surat as it would be a better option over metallurgy. As my sister studied there, I am very well aware of the college and its pros and cons.

Choose wisely after performing a significant amount of research and analysis about the courses that you wish to get enrolled in from either of these institutions.
There are many things to consider while choosing a college such as placements, location, branch, choice, your expectations after 4 years of engineering life, etc.
If you have a liking for a particular branch then go to that college all things considered. Being a student of MNIT myself, I can say that, if you are only concerned about placements then MNIT Jaipur will prove to be a better choice.
The following data comparing the placements at both institutes will hopefully give you better clarity.
