CGPA: This step is often ignored after focusing too much on JEE preparations. It is very crucial to maintain 8.5+ CGPA by the end of the first year. The first-year subjects are comparatively easier and mostly are a part of JEE syllabus. So even without attending classes, one can stay at the top by studying sincerely 2-3 weeks before the exams and seeking help from your wingmates.
Hall: Taking part in hall activities is very necessary to maintain good relations with your seniors that will be guiding you on various parameters during your time at IIT. You can take part in Open IITs, sports, and SoCult activities, and learn a lot in Technical events.
Society: It is a very important way to explore your interests so go for as many as possible. They give you a chance to meet new people and develop good personal and professional relationships. The selection procedure of these societies helps you prepare for your GDPI around placements and thus is really helpful.
Trips: KGP is surrounded by many places that can be explored with your friends like Kolkata, Digha Beach, Mandarmani Beach, and Puri. These places can be visited during some weekends, and places like Sikkim or Darjeeling can be explored by the end of the first year.
Fests: IIT KGP has 2 amazing Fests called Spring Fest and Kshitij held during Spring semester that gives you a chance to make thousands of memories. It is a fun-filled experience comprising the star nights in Spring Fest, the lectures you hear in Kshitij, and the bots you see in the arena, all of which are very important. Don’t miss out on these amazing events as you might regret it later.

Should I join IIT Kharagpur for B.arch?
There are two aspects to the question. You asked.
- Is the bachelor of architecture course at IIT Kharagpur good?
To answer this part, I will say with certainty that IIT Kharagpur is an excellent institute. However, as far as architecture is concerned, your first choice should always be the elite schools of architecture like SPA or CEPT. This is mainly because IITs are known for their technology and not architecture.
- Should a person who's only interested in physics and math, go for architecture or not?
If you are genuinely interested in physics and math, then this will be one of your strengths and will prove to be useful in the journey of architecture.
Architecture requires problem-solving skills apart from artistic skills. There are many students who are average in drawing but have excellent ideas and designs. To broaden your knowledge about art and architecture you can read books.
What is average salary package of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engg, student at IIT Kharagpur?
IIT Kharagpur in general does not publish complete placements anywhere. So it is kind of difficult to get accurate information, nevertheless the student media bodies of IIT Kharagpur publish these details with some limitations.
Around 95% of students are placed this year, and many top companies came for campus placements. Top companies are

Should I join IIT Kharagpur mining engineering just for IIT Tag?
Joining a certain branch that you are not even interested in just for the IIT tag is not the most logical decision. One usually decides on a certain branch for 3 reasons; either to get a good package or to pursue your area of interest or to follow the majority. However, in the case of Mining Engineering, this is not the case at all. You won’t be available to avail either of these benefits because of its low demand. In fact you will end up with the following circumstances
- You will have to work extremely hard in the first year in order to get a branch change
- In case you are unable to get a branch change, you will start running after POR, join different clubs to work on your non Engineering abilities.
- During placements you will be more inclined towards Non-Core placements because of your aversion to Mining.
Still, if you are adamant about getting into IIT, then join only if
- You want to work in analytics, consult or analyst after 4 years instead of Engineering
- If you want to pursue MBA from an IIM
- If you want to switch your field after graduation.
The reason why I am suggesting you give up Engineering is that with Mining, you can literally pursue anything other than Engineering. So it’s better you make up your mind for the same or apply to other institutes.
Should I go for IIT Kharagpur or IIT Dhanbad?
Without any second thoughts, IITKGP is a far better option than IIT Dhanbad in terms of both worth and recognition. The primary reason is its legacy and early establishment. To give you a better picture I am going to entail the pros and causes of IIT KGP bringing to light both sides of the coin.
Pros
- You will get the chance to pursue the subject that interests you and fuel your passion.
- Mechanical branch is much more preferred than metallurgy.
- IIT ISM is developing at a fast pace and will soon overtake other institutes after its inauguration of the biggest library in India.
Cons:
- Petroleum engineering does not guarantee good placements. Around 50% of the batch remains and placed and the situation is a result of a steady decline in petroleum industries in India.
- Dhanbad is not a very promising city in terms of exposure and opportunities.
- Electrical engineering failed to offer decent placement in the past, and the IIT tag does not seem to improve the situation.
The final decision is for you to make.

Coding isn’t necessarily meant for CSE students only and has a broader angle to it. Coding simply means simplifying tasks by expressing them in form of a set of routines or commands and making the computer do work for us. So, if you are interested in coding then being in a core branch doesn’t restrict you from pursuing your passion.

- Competitive Coding: This type of coding is the basic foundation of coding and is usually meant for beginners. You are introduced to Hackerrank, CodeChef, and TopCoder.
- Open Source Programming: The open source culture within the campus of IIT Kharagpur is promoted by the KOSS or the Kharagpur Open Source Society. This group has made excellent accomplishments in the field of coding at IIT Kharagpur. - Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking, App Development and Web Development: These are the miscellaneous courses of Robotics that are hosted by the Web and Design teams of both SpringFest and KTJ to promote extensive learning and experience in this field. In 2022, the VGSOM IIT Kharagpur business school achieved a 100% placement rate for its students. All 97 students who registered for the placement process were successfully placed in jobs. The highest salary package offered during the placement process was 31.98 LPA, while the average package was 19.36 LPA. These strong placement results demonstrate the success of VGSOM IIT Kharagpur in preparing its students for the job market and the value that employers place on its graduates.
Here is an individual's experience at IIT Roorkee, which was one in which he received admission to the institute in 2004 after having eight years of work experience. At that time, the management programs at IITs were relatively new and placements were not as strong as they are now. Despite this, he decided to attend IITR and focus on their studies and enjoying their MBA experience, rather than worrying about job prospects. As a result, he performed well academically and was able to secure an okay job in the IT industry. Ultimately, he retired in 2010 to travel and is still doing so seven years later. He believes that both IITs and new IIMs are good options for business education and that it ultimately depends on the individual's goals and priorities. Why should I prefer IIT Kharagpur over other IITs?
My sister is not only an IIT KGP pass out but also has many friends in other IITs. So from her experience she does not regret choosing KGP over others and stated a number of reasons for the same
- The massive campus with beautiful infrastructure is enough to attract Engineering aspirants. You can never get enough of the campus and explore it completely.
- IIT KGP is located in a town that is almost nonexistent and thus the highlight is the campus itself. You get to develop strong bonds with your college, campus and make friends for life.
- The director himself is an alumni who has multiple accomplishments in the field of Academia before becoming a director. Owing to his own experience at IIT KGP, he has brought dynamism and liveliness to the campus. Under him, the Institute has flourished all the more.
- Everything digital aid be it movies, tv-series, documentaries, games, or video-lectures are available at the touch of a fingertip because of the excellent LAN facilities. This can be sought positively and used in the right way to bring out the best results as a student.
- KGP offers a variety of disciplines apart from Engineering like humanities, management, law and medicine. This helps them to interact with professors and students from other disciplines as well and adds to the overall learning experience.
These are some distinguishing features of IIT KGP that makes it a more viable option than other IITs.
What is the integrated MSc in chemistry at IIT Kharagpur?
M.Sc Chemistry at IIT Kharagpur is a five-year integrated MSc course offered by the Department of chemistry.
In the first year, all the courses will be the same for all the departments. Out of these courses, only one is chemistry. Other courses are from other departments like Electrical, computer science, Mechanical, Physics, etc. Here, you are given a chance to explore at least one course from most of the departments. Based on your performance in first year (i.e CGPA) you can change your department (also called Depc). But for this, you need to get a CGPA of more than the cut-off CGPA of the department to which you want to change.
For instance suppose, Electrical Engineering department has a cut-off CGPA of 9.2 for DepC then you need to get a CGPA of more than 9.2 for DepC to Electrical.
