Which is best: Civil Engineering in IIT Bhubaneswar or in Gandhinagar?

AG
Ashmita Ghose Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech from IIT Bhubaneswar (2019)

Civil Engineering from IIT Gandhinagar is a better choice as compared to Civil Engineering from IIT Bhubaneswar. Although IIT Gandhinagar is among the newly constructed IITs, it has an impressive faculty in the Civil Engineering department. Besides, the placement record of IIT Gandhinagar is better for Civil Engineering as compared to IIT Bhubaneswar. IIT Gandhinagar has been a preferred choice of most research scholars who wish to pursue their Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. Although the infrastructure of IIT Bhubaneswar is better than IIT Gandhinagar, the latter has a locational advantage(Gandhinagar being the capital of Gujarat) over the former(Bhubaneswar being the capital of Odisha). Furthermore, as compared to other branches, the civil engineering branch at IIT Gandhinagar comprises eminent and revered faculty. On the contrary, IIT Bhubaneswar had faced a shortage of faculty in civil engineering for quite some time.

I got into mechanical in IIT Bhubaneswar in the first allotment. The cutoff for the same at Gandhinagar is 3500 and my rank is 3880. Will I get it?

There are high possibilities that you will get it. There are three rounds of selection in IIT Gandhinagar. If your rank is 3500 and the first round cut-off is 3880 then there are high chances of getting selected by the end of the second round.

Looking at the cut off the trend of the last few years, then it is quite clear IIT Gandhinagar released quite decent ranks throughout. In 2019, the cut off for the mechanical department was 4476 whereas in 2018 the cut off was 4229. So having a rank of 3880 is not bad and the possibilities of getting selected are quite high.

For selection, rank is not the only thing considered in IIT Gandhinagar. The scores of the 10th and the 12th standard of the candidate are also considered. In the two-step selection process, the rank is considered first and then the Board’s scores. Then finally, the top percentile candidates on the list will be selected. Although certain advantages are provided to the SC/OBC candidates in terms of ranks, the seats are allotted differently for the general category and the SC/OBC category which do not overlap each other during selection.

IIT Bhubaneswar is the first choice for most of the students when it comes to mechanical. When you will be selected in the first allotment there, IIT Gandhinagar will not be that challenging and by the end of the second or third allotment, you may get selected.

Does a student pursuing an M.Tech in IIT Gandhinagar get enough time to prepare for exams like the GATE?

BY
Bhanu Yadav Posted On : February 22nd, 2021
B.Tech Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2016)

IIT’s generally have a rigorous curriculum design making it difficult for individuals to focus on long-term career growth & development. Proper time management would definitely be the demand for that specific target set by the individual.

The important details to look upon are :

  • The 75% attendance scenario is also mandatory and you must attend all classes. The criterion is not strict as it depends on the faculty members. Some make it compulsory while others can be a little lenient.
  • The total class time required for the course is approximately 20 hours per week. This gives you enough scope to focus on other major areas of study after the regular course framework.
  • If you study around 10 hours a week then it is easy to cope up with the assignments and exams.
  • A teaching assistantship is also a major area that will take close to 8 hours per week providing a specific amount to the candidate.

M.Tech is a course that cannot be taken for granted so attending classes is a must, but cracking exams requires dedication & consistency on another level to maintain competitiveness and achieve your targets. On the whole, what a candidate needs to find is hands-on management skills.

Why is IIT Gandhinagar behaving more like a private college and less like an IIT?

PJ
Pritam Jain Posted On : February 20th, 2021
B.Tech. Electrical Engineering IIT Gandhinagar

A senior of mine recently completed her M.Tech from IIT Gandhinagar. The following answer is based on her experience.

It has been heard a lot that IIT Gandhinagar is behaving more like a private college or a death brand IIT or a business enterprise. Some of the following points are looked at when such questions are asked:

  • IIT Gandhinagar is one of the fastest-growing second-generation IITs started in 2008-09. The institute has recently completed 11 years.
  • The institute aims to empower students with branch change policies which are the most liberal in nature, well-managed services provided by the library, groundbreaking research, innovations that are cutting edge, and attractive placement opportunities.
  • Students are given choice and flexibility in case of choosing dual majors, minors, honors, course range, and short courses.
  • IIT Gandhinagar is one of the most globalized campuses in India. It offers opportunities for studying abroad in the form of research internships, summer programs, semesters overseas, etc.
  • The institute promotes maximum interactions between different disciplines with 7 Interdisciplinary Research Centres. The infrastructure in research is commonly shared and is not a monopoly.
  • The institute promotes learning that is project-oriented which puts emphasis on learning by doing.
  • Humanities cover 20% of the network and core requirements are in the sciences, design, and innovation in various fields.

The above points are some of the distinctive features which make the institute stand out. It continuously fights for the personal and multi-dimensional development of the students, staff, and faculty.

Playing the blame game is easy but it can be difficult to see the positives sometimes. In a decade, the institute has given a number of unique initiatives which are now being emulated by other institutes across India.

How is Chemical Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar in terms of course, faculty, packages and placements?

DS
Deeksha Seth Posted On : March 2nd, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2019)

Chemical Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) is decent and underrated, but it is an extremely diverse engineering course one could opt for. As in India, it is difficult to grab your hands on a chemical engineering job because of the supply factor. The supply is greater than the demand itself. It is the quantity that is neglected and the quality which is regarded more.

The companies/corporations are profited by hiring candidates who are experienced and not freshers. And since the projects you would be working on would be concerned with chemical plants, it is obvious why they require people who are good with their knowledge and have prior experience.

DRDO, HPCL, etc.

The companies here would also not accept people who are highly skilled like chemical engineers themselves, as they would demand a high salary. But considering the kind of projects they work on, they have people like chemists and mechanical engineers who are responsible for running the organisation. But if they have an installation and design provided by chemical engineering companies, that is when they would require chemical engineers.

Lastly, why people don't take chemical engineering seriously is because of how unaware the people are of the basic facts concerning it in general. On the other hand, if you look at IT and service sectors, people are aware because they either have a friend/family/neighbour working in that sector. This isn't with chemical engineering, So, to capsule whatever I have mentioned, it is simply how people carry misconceptions that cause a shortage of jobs for this position.
