What should be my preference between CSE at IIIT Guwahati and EEE at NIT Patna/Puducherry?
According to my friends at IIIT Guwahati, CSE at IIIT Guwahati is definitely a better choice. Let me provide some points which will give you a better insight into the colleges.
- The campus of NIT Puducherry is almost 130 km away from the city, located in a remote place known as Karaikal. This hampers placements.
- In NIT Puducherry, 90-95% of students are from South India. So, students from other parts of the country face a serious linguistic problem.
- For most North Indian Students, it is somewhat hard to sustain in the South Indian culture.
- IIIT Guwahati has experienced rapid growth over the last few years, which makes it a much better choice than NIT Patna/ Puducherry.
- There is no home state quota in IIIT Guwahati, so there is no such problem of linguistics as in NITs.
- In addition, there are 18 students in IIIT Guwahati who are from abroad, selected through the DASA UG scheme of 18 seats.
- From 2019, the B.Tech seats were increased by 33% for Girl Supernumerary Quota, because the previous batch had only 3.5% girls. The total number of seats from then is 233.

Therefore, IIIT Guwahati has a lot of advantages over NIT Patna/ Puducherry, which makes it a better choice for students in engineering.
In your opinion, which is the best, among IIIT Sri City, Guwahati, Kota, Lucknow and Trichy?
If you are considering IIIT Kolkata, IIIT Sri City and IIIT Trichy are all colleges that have done very well and are also developing quite well. Compared to these, IIIT Guwahati and Lucknow are not quite up to the mark yet.
As for IIIT Sri City, I have a friend studying there and according to him, this college is one of the first among the others to have its own campus.
- It was completed about a year or two ago so if you are looking for admission, definitely go to IIIT Sri City.
- The very first batch from this college had an average package offer of INR 7.5 LPA and is quite good as compared to mid-level NITs.
- The mentorships provided by IIITH also helps a lot and the curriculum here is amazing.
- If you are looking for research, almost every student ends up publishing a research paper in B.Tech. Students are even better to go on to publish around 6 to 7 international papers as well.

What should I take, an ECE in IIIT Guwahati or a CSE at IIIT Vadodara?
The choice depends upon your area of interest and the subjects that you enjoy studying. If you are inclined towards hardware and communication, ECE is the perfect fit for you. But if you like dealing with software, go with CSE. Both fields have ample growth opportunities.

Which one should I choose, IIIT Kota or IIIT Guwahati?
Both the IIITs are among the newly established IIITs which still have a long way to achieve the same level of big IIITs like Hyderabad. I have friends from both of these institutes who are currently pursuing their B.Tech.
According to them, both the colleges offer good quality education and compares neck to neck. Here’s how:
- Academics: As both of them are IIITs, the quality of academics and curriculum is great.
- Campus placements: Both IIIT Kota and IIIT Guwahati share similar placement patterns with last year’s highest package of 10 LPA for the CSE batch. You can say that both of them have mediocre placement records and a non-existent coding culture.
- Infrastructure: Guwahati takes the trophy because of its newly completed permanent campus. On the other hand, IIIT Kota still doesn’t have its own permanent campus and is estimated to be ready by 2024. It is currently running at NIT Jaipur’s campus.
- Location: This factor totally depends on where you are from. For someone who is from the Eastern half of the country, IIIT Guwahati is the best choice. Similarly, people belonging to the Western and half, IIIT Kota is good enough. There is no need to travel from across the country for these equally ranking institutes.
Overall, both of the IIITs are new and struggling with a lot of factors like placements, lacking coding culture and facilities. Nevertheless, IIIT Guwahati has a slight edge over Kota because of its permanent campus if the location is not a problem for you. However, better not to opt for either of these colleges unless you have a JEE rank between 15–25k, and don’t have greater options nearby.
What should I choose between Thapar and IIIT, Guwahati (2018) for ECE?
I have friends from both Thapar University and IIIT Guwahati, and undoubtedly, Thapar holds the legacy of being the best private engineering college after BITS Pilani.
Check out the following reasons why Thapar University beats IIIT Guwahati here:
- Campus culture: The coding culture is very profound at Thapar whereas in IIIT Guwahati it's almost non-existent and is more focused on research.
- Placement: The records are far better at Thapar and have a greater number of companies visiting for campus placements. On the other hand, NO ECE company showed up during the campus placements last year at IIIT Guwahati.
- Curriculum: The biggest con of IIIT Guwahati is the curriculum. The curriculum makes no sense because subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are scattered over all 8 semesters instead of the first year itself. Practical subjects like Machine Learning and the Internet of Things are presented theoretically without any lab sessions which is absurd.
- Alumni network: Thapar University has a much greater alumni base across India and abroad due to its long history. Whereas, IIIT Guwahati being established less than a decade ago has a limited alumni base.
IIIT Guwahati lies nowhere in the league of Thapar University. Join IIIT Guwahati only if you are more inclined towards research work and higher studies, especially branches like ECE. If better infrastructure, better placements, huge alumni network, is what you are looking for, choose Thapar University any day!
What are my chances of getting into IIIT Guwahati with a rank of 55k in the special round and an OBC rank of 14k?
The special round of admission is conducted by the college when the seats of the college remain unallocated. Usually, after the 7th round, most of the seats of the colleges get filled, only the students who are not satisfied with the branch leave the seats and it becomes vacant.
These leftover seats go for the special round and it may be of any branch and you should be ready for that. If you are applying for a special round there is a probability that you will get selected. But you will have to accept the branch as allocated to you.
Keep checking the website of the college if the college is conducting any spot round. You will have to fill the application and do all the formalities for applying in the spot round. Since you have scored 55000 ranks, your chances of getting selected in IIIT Guwahati are quite good as the seats got increased from 89 to 180.
Don’t choose CSE branch to choose multiple branches, your chances will get higher for selection.
I am confused over joining IIIT Guwahati and NIT Silchar for Computer Science branch. Many of my friends have warned me of poor teaching in IIITG. How far is it true?
Both the colleges are not very good. But if you want to choose between IIIT Guwahati and NIT Silchar then it would be better to choose NIT Silchar. Because at IIIT Guwahati, the administration, infrastructure, and faculty members are not so good. If you will face any problem in the college then the administration does not even care. You will have to survive on your own.
NIT Silchar has better infrastructure as compared to IIIT Guwahati. The student union of the college will take care of the problems and they will raise their voices against them. If you have the option of not choosing northeastern colleges then you must go ahead. At the end of the day, it depends upon you how you want to spend your four years in college.
Which is better: IIIT Guwahati or Thapar University?
I have a few friends at both institutes so I can give you some idea about them. Both IIIT Guwahati and Thapar University are very good engineering institutes, but the former will be a better choice.
Thapar University is a reputed private institute with good infrastructure, an updated curriculum, and a well-developed alumni base. But when compared to IIIT Guwahati it falls behind.
If we check the recent placement statistics for these two institutes, there a big difference can be seen. The average CTC offered at Thapar for recent years has been around 7 LPA, whereas for IIIT Guwahati the average CTC is around 10.2 LPA.
The final decision is yours. Consider all these facts and choose wisely.
How are the mess and canteens at IIIT, Guwahati?
IIIT Guwahati has two canteens, one in the hostel building and one in the academic building.
- The canteen at IIIT Guwahati is average. It is just like the ones that are common among all the government colleges. It is not much developed and high standard, however, it serves its purpose.
- The canteens at both the girls’ and boys’ hostel are allowed to operate till late at night. The canteen in the academic building is operated from 10 am to 11 pm.
- There is also a food van available that delivers food directly to the hostel.
- The mess service at IIIT Guwahati is just fine. It serves three-time meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- There is also a tea facility for an extra charge. It is not included in the mess charge and has to be paid separately.
- The breakfast and lunch served are usually vegetarian. At the dinner, the students are given an option to choose between a vegetarian special item and a non-vegetarian special item.
- The taste is good and the food is of satisfactory level. The non-vegetarian food served is really good.
Both the mess and canteen are not high profile but are satisfactory. Now, tenders are offered, thus making a competition between caterers which is a positive sign for improvement and better service.
What will be better for me - Electrical Engineering from NIT Kurukshetra or CSE/IT from IIIT Lucknow or Guwahati?
My sister did her B.Tech from NIT Kurukshetra as it is one of the top-rated NIT and she had a wonderful time there.
So, I would suggest you to go for Electrical Engineering at NIT Kurukshetra. However to help you make a better decision here’s a comparison between the three colleges:

If you choose a better college over a branch then you will have an advantage during placements as companies would be aching to visit for hiring new students. You can have a better branch but it won’t matter as you wouldn’t get enough placement opportunities. Students from NIT are placed in some of the top multinational companies.
