Why is JBIMS better than SIMSREE despite both having almost the same quality of students?

JT
Jayant Thakur Posted On : March 3rd, 2023
MBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 2011)

As a potential student, you should be aware of the establishment years of the preferred institutes in Mumbai. The following are the establishment years of the institutes in Mumbai:

  • Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies - 1965
  • WE School - 1977
  • S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research - 1981
  • K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research - 1981
  • Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies - 1981
  • Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management - 1995

It is important to note that this list only includes pure B-schools and excludes TISS for Social Sciences (1936) and NITIE for Industrial Engineering (1963).

Establishment year is not necessarily an indicator of the worth or popularity of an institute, as demonstrated by the relatively young Indian School of Business (ISB) which has gained a strong reputation in just 22 years. However, a longer establishment period can provide an institute with a head start, a larger alumni base, and increased brand awareness.

In terms of the admission process, the establishment year of an institute is not a determining factor. This year, the process was the same for all institutes, with students admitted based on their score on the Common Entrance Test (CET). A score of 99.85+ would generally get you into JBIMS, while a score of 99.8 might result in admission to Sydenham. The difference between these scores is negligible and does not necessarily indicate a difference in ability or aptitude.

JBIMS has maintained a strong ranking for a long time and is expected to continue to do so in the future. It is unlikely that Sydenham will surpass JBIMS in terms of ranking. However, if JBIMS were to move away from the CET centralized process, Sydenham would likely become the top institute based on CET scores alone.

There are some differences in the environment and atmosphere at JBIMS versus other MMS offering institutes. JBIMS has a unique reputation, which is partially due to the work of its alumni in the industry, and partially due to the fact that some professors only teach at JBIMS and do not teach at other institutes. As a result, each year, several students from SIMSREE take the CET again in an attempt to get into JBIMS.

Ultimately, what matters most is what you do with your admission to an institute, rather than the institute itself. Getting into JBIMS and not performing well in life is not meaningful. Instead, you should focus on identifying yourself within two years and becoming better than the crowd, regardless of the institute you attend. Whether at JBIMS or Sydenham, you can strive to be at the top of your academic game, take on internships, and pursue certifications to enhance your career prospects. The tag of your institute may matter for a few years, but it is ultimately up to you to make the most of your corporate career.

Does JBIMS accept a student with a year gap?

HN
Hardik Nagar Posted On : March 3rd, 2023
MBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 2011)

If you meet the eligibility criteria for the Common Entrance Test (CET) of JBIMS and achieve a score above the required cutoff, there is no need to worry about your admission chances. The admission decision is based solely on the score obtained on the written test.

However, once admitted, you will likely be asked about any gaps in your education during various stages, such as while preparing for summer internships, during summer internship interviews (for companies that have a no-gap criterion), while preparing for final placements, during final placement interviews, and even during your first few job changes. JBIMS may be accepting of a 99.9+ score, but recruiters may not share the same enthusiasm.

You may be asked about any gaps in your education during the interview process. In this case, it is important to share any relevant experiences and learnings from the gap year. Having a gap in education is not a problem, but not having learned anything from it may be viewed negatively.

It is too early to worry about these potential scenarios. Focus on preparing for and performing well in the written tests, as the rest can be managed later.

How is JBIMS compared to IIM L, K?

AJ
Arshit Jain Posted On : March 3rd, 2023
M.M.S. in Finance, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 2021)

It is advised not to consider the new IIMs in the same league as L, K, and JBIMS. Among L, K, and JBIMS, IIM Lucknow should be placed first. Despite JBIMS being older than IIM Lucknow, IIM Lucknow boasts greater diversity and a more established brand.

In terms of personal preferences, both IIM Kozhikode and JBIMS have their own strengths and weaknesses. When it comes to placement, alumni base, and return on investment, JBIMS has the upper hand.

However, the campus of IIM Kozhikode is unmatched and offers an unrivaled business school experience that is not present in JBIMS. Some might argue that the IIM brand is stronger than that of JBIMS, but IIM Kozhikode, as a 25-year-old institution, has created its own brand reputation, while JBIMS, a 65-year-old institution, is highly respected in the corporate world.

It is also worth mentioning that the median placement of JBIMS has exceeded 22 lakhs this year, while that of IIM Kozhikode is around 20 lakhs. While it is known that some students have left IIM Kozhikode and IIM Lucknow to attend JBIMS, it is also likely that the reverse has occurred.

In conclusion, the suggested order would be IIM Lucknow > JBIMS > IIM Kozhikode.

5 years down the line which will benefit you better, SP Jain or JBIMS?

S
Sagardeep Posted On : March 3rd, 2023
Studied at Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi (Graduated 2021)

Both SP Jain and JBIMS are highly reputable, but objectively speaking, SPJIMR should be the preferred choice between the two. Its selection process is highly unique, based on profile and fit, and extremely thorough. The school thoroughly evaluates if a candidate matches its culture and academic standards. It is recommended to visit the SPJIMR campus for the interviews. The social integration through the DOCC and Project Abhudaya programs helps to produce well-rounded leaders. Placements at SPJIMR are also noteworthy, so be sure to review their placement reports.

In conclusion, if you do not have experience with A, B, C, L, FMS, and XL, then SPJIMR is the ideal campus for pursuing an MBA.

How can I arrange the following according to an MBA/PGDM: NMIMS, Mumbai, SBIM, Pune, IIFT, Delhi, Great Lakes, Chennai, SPJIMR, Mumbai and JBIMS, Mumbai?

AA
Abijit Ambekar Posted On : March 1st, 2023
Studied at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune

I have given the preference order of the above-mentioned B Schools. However please remember this is based on my personal opinions and not any official figures

1st: NMIMS is one of the best schools in Mumbai with fewer fees and great specialization in Finance. Its distinguishing feature is its small batch size which is extremely beneficial for excellent placements. The companies that visit offer the best roles to their students mainly because of their credibility and strong alumni network.

2nd: SPJIMR too is located in Mumbai and is the second-best School after JBMINS. Its students intake is very good due to the strict selection process. The placements are at par with JBIMS but the fees are a bit higher. It's ranked in the top 3 in Operation and IT specialization in India.

3rd: One of the oldest institutes for MBA, IIFT is a good choice owing to its strong brand name and small batch size.

4th: SIBM Pune is a blend of everything; a Good campus, good corporate competition, hostel life, good infrastructure, faculty, and placement. It gives you an amazing MBA experience l.

5th: NMIMS Mumbai is great for MBA and is at par with SIBM. But I have ranked it the last owing to its high fees and larger batch size that requires a lot of competition during placements.

So the ranking is

NMIMS>SPJIMR>IIFT>SIBM Pune>NMIMS Mumbai

What should be the study plan to get into JBIMS?

TC
Tanuj Chandra Posted On : February 28th, 2023
Student Mentor at Catking

To gain admission into JBIMS, it is essential to possess more than just a study plan. A positive mindset, consistency, and speed are key to success.

JBIMS admission procedure is managed through DTE. For Maharashtra-based candidates, CET scores are accepted. There is a reservation for All India Seats, where one may apply through CAT, ATMA, or MAT. It is important to keep in mind that focusing on the JBIMS cutoff for CET or any other exam is not recommended, as the school is highly sought after and the intake for General Candidates is approximately 50. Therefore, aim to rank first in CET or any other exams accepted by JBIMS, as only the top 50 students are enrolled.

As for the study plan, it is imperative to have a strong grasp of basics and Vedic maths. The CET exam consists of 200 questions and has a duration of 150 minutes, equating to roughly 30-40 seconds per question. Therefore, it is crucial to be quick with calculations. A mentor should focus on speed and accuracy while preparing students for the exam.

  • Start by learning tables, squares, cubes, and formulas, and ensure to revise them weekly.
  • Take one mock CET exam, and analyze both your strong and weak sections.
  • Utilize the option to toggle between sections by attempting the section where you score better first, as this will boost confidence during the weaker sections.
  • Since there is no negative marking in CET, try to attempt as many questions as possible. Analyze your weaker areas and make a list of them.
  • Ensure a clear understanding of concepts for topics causing difficulties by solving 5-10 questions daily. This will increase comfort and scores.
  • Practice solving at least 10 abstract reasoning questions daily. This is the easiest and quickest section to clear, with 25 questions in CET based on abstract reasoning. With regular practice, this section can be cleared in 15 minutes with 95% accuracy.
  • In the Verbal section, focus on being clear with grammar and vocabulary, with the main emphasis on speed. Practice one RC daily and aim to solve it in under 5 minutes.
  • To improve speed in Quants and DI, learn Vedic Maths and shortcut tricks. Regularly revise formulas.
  • For LR, practice 5-10 questions daily and one question of Seating Arrangement and Puzzles each.
  • Continuously give sectional mocks to increase accuracy and once concepts have been completed, start taking full-length mocks. Analyze the first three mocks, set a strategy, and then focus on implementing it while solving all other available mocks. This will help improve speed, and accuracy, and build confidence.

By following these steps, one can effectively prepare for CET and gain admission into JBIMS.

How good is JBIMS as compared to IIMs, XLRI, and FMS in regard to faculty, placements, alumni, etc.?

SS
Shiv Shakti Posted On : February 28th, 2023
Guest Faculty at JBIMS for training students for GDPI for placements

You are advised to choose wisely when it comes to selecting the top MBA colleges. Most of the top colleges have excellent faculty who are experts in their fields and students highly appreciate their teachings. The alumni network is a crucial factor to consider, and it is best to speak to students and alumni of the colleges to get a better understanding.

The top-of-the-line MBA colleges include IIMs A, B, and C, which are considered untouchable at the moment. XLRI stands out for its HR batch, the opportunities it offers, and its excellent course structure.

If you are comparing FMS, JBIMS, and XLRI BM, you can consider your interest and preference. The author is biased towards JBIMS as her husband is from that college and she has close connections with the students and alumni. However, if you get admitted to XLRI BM, it is a great brand to be associated with, especially if you are interested in finance.

When it comes to choosing between JBIMS and FMS, you can opt for JBIMS if you are sure about pursuing finance, else you can choose either. Among the IIMs, the author rates IIM L above JBIMS and FMS and considers JBIMS and FMS above IIM I and K.

It is suggested not to rely on the ROI concept, as the benefits of a good education cannot be gauged in one year and do not follow arithmetic progression rules. Instead, you should look at the opportunities offered by the college and how it fits into your plan. Do not base your decision solely on rankings posted in newspapers and magazines or the highest packages offered during placement.
