How is the MSc Applied Statistics and Informatics course in IIT Bombay?

AT
Adwait Tejas Posted On : March 17th, 2023
studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2021)

MSc Applied Statistics and Infometrics at IIT Bombay can be challenging for some students who did their B.Sc from Mumbai University, especially if they did not receive sufficient training in statistics. In comparison to Delhi University and Calcutta University, the Mumbai University curriculum is relatively deficient in statistical topics. Consequently, most of the students in the class come from DU and CU. While DU and CU students are often comfortable during the first quarter or half of the semester since they studied similar topics in their bachelor's programs, Mumbai University students may struggle to keep up.

Despite the challenges, this course is in line with current analytics trends in the market. The course requires students to complete not only statistics courses but also intermediate-level computer science courses such as C, C++, Data Structures, and Applied Algorithms. Students also receive some exposure to statistical software, depending on which software the professor prefers: SaS or R.

What is the placement scenario after PhD in IIT Bombay?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 17th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The placement scenario after PhD in IIT Bombay is generally poor, according to student feedback and departmental elections.

  • Ph.D. students typically have very specific knowledge that may not be useful to companies, so they may not be recruited by BTech companies.
  • There is no specific body that helps bring companies for Ph.D. students, resulting in a lack of job opportunities for graduates.
  • Ph.D. graduates pursue two directions: Professor in a University or a specified job, but finding a job can be difficult without faculty contacts.

The average salary for a Ph.D. student at IIT Bombay ranges from INR 3.4 Lakhs to INR 4.2 Lakhs per year.

Which is considered better for doing an MTech (CS): IISC, Bangalore or IIT, Bombay?

MT
Mayank Trivedi Posted On : March 20th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc)

In my opinion, IISc Bangalore is a way better option than IIT Bombay mainly because it offers core engineering in computer science e.g. Linux Kernel Programming. It is true computer engineering. It helps you understand the science of Computer Engineering and develop a strong grasp of it.

Any science be it Computer Science or any other is solely based on concepts and implementation of these concepts is quite difficult. An extensive knowledge of Computer Science doesn’t necessarily ensure great Computer engineering skills. But it’s true vice versa. So by going for IISC, one is surely choosing the path of excellence through the very foundation of Computer Science.

IIT Bombay is a brand that is known nationwide whereas IISc is known globally mainly because of its focus on core and complex concepts in Computer Science. Moreover the quality and quality of papers submitted by IISc is much more than IIT Bombay and this already reflects how successful it is going to become in the future.

How is IITK (IIT Kanpur) different from IITB (IIT Bombay)?

VS
Vijay Sarnaik Posted On : March 18th, 2023
Studied at IIT Kanpur
IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay are the top 2 IITs in India with IIT Kanpur giving an edge to IIT Bombay. The only aspect of IIT Bombay that is better than IIT Kanpur is its metropolitan location. In almost every other aspect, IIT Kanpur is way ahead.

  • After IITKGP, IIT Kanpur has the biggest campus in India, approximately 1100 Acres. IIT Bombay on the other hand is half the size of IIT Kanpur around 560 Acres.
  • IIT Kanpur is the only institute in India to have its own Airstrip, Hangar, Glider pilot licensing system, and National Wind Tunnel Facility.
  • The huge Open Air Theatre has the capacity to accommodate 3000 people at a time.
  • World-class sports facilities.
  • The problems of the students are catered to by the largest counseling service.

IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay are not even comparable given the advantages IIT Kanpur has over IITB.

Will it be a good decision to choose NMIMS, NITIE, JBIMS or IIT Mumbai for an MBA?

VA
Vivek Agarwal Posted On : February 27th, 2023
PGDM from T. A. Pai Management Institute (2019)

No doubt all the institutes you mentioned are excellent in their respective standards and fields. But the primary element that should be stressed before choosing a college is what kind of MBA you are looking for. You should determine the specialization you are willing to go for, the kind of curriculum and crowd you are expecting, and various other factors.

You need to keep in mind that an MBA degree will pose just as a stepping stone to success and cannot guarantee your success. The ultimate determining factor is the level of knowledge you gain and how you perform throughout.

All the Institutes you mentioned are top-notch and are globally recognized knowledge hubs. You cannot make a choice just on the basis of your preference. You will have to work tremendously hard to make it into these esteemed institutes.

Why is CSE at IIT Bombay the better option over CSE at IIT Kanpur?

AG
Aman Goenka Posted On : March 17th, 2023
B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) (Graduated 2017)

When choosing between IIT Bombay and IIT Kanour for CSE, you must decide to go with IIT Bombay for the following reasons:

  • There are many students from Kanpur and near Kanpur who choose IIT Bombay because they want to live independently, and develop their personality.
  • Kanpur is not as developed as Mumbai, and choosing Kanpur will slow down your progress significantly in some or the other way.
  • IIT Bombay is a natural choice for top JEE rankers and if you speak to the seniors or alumni, everyone else will suggest that too.
  • Comparing institutes is not a good idea, but comparing cities is important since you'll be spending about 4 years there.
  • IIT Bombay has better placements, infrastructure, environment as well as faculties.

Therefore, CSE at IIT Bombay is the better option over CSE at IIT Kanpur.

Why did you join IIT Bombay instead of IISc for an MTech (CSE)?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 17th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

If you're trying to choose between IISc and IIT Bombay for an MTech CSE, here are some features of each that you may find helpful:

IISc:

  • Focuses solely on Masters and PhD programs, providing full attention to these students as compared to IITs where BTechs dominate.
  • Is a premier institute for learning Machine Learning, AI, and related subjects like NLP, Speech Processing, Computer Vision, Information Retrieval, Game Theory, and Database Systems from basics which will take you to places.
  • Provides exposure to Bangalore IT industry through professor collaboration (also available in IITs).
  • Boasts of a big and green campus with single occupancy hostel and students who are more focused on studies as compared to IIT students who are involved in many other activities.
  • Hostel, Mess, and Departments are not too far from each other, unlike IIT Bombay where a bus runs from the hostel to the department every 15 minutes.

IIT Bombay:

  • Boasts of a diverse student population ranging from Bachelor to PhD, which provides extra enthusiasm.
  • Provides a tough competition from bachelor students who will perform more by putting less effort due to their capabilities.
  • Teachers at IIT Bombay are known for Machine Learning and related subjects, but from the courses offered, IISc starts with the basics first like probability, optimization, and linear algebra. After studying ML from IISc, the opinion of the author is that IISc has a little extra advantage in that.
  • Features varied flora and fauna too at IIT Bombay with a lake, a small hill with national forest on the other side.
  • Hosts many events, one of them being Mood Indigo.
  • Mumbai is a more enjoyable city compared to Bangalore. Bangalore weather is good throughout the year compared to Mumbai, which is humid most of the time.
  • Being in IIT opens the door to any kind of company for placement which BTech students also sit for. So if there's competition, there's also a reward for that.

Ultimately, both IISc and IIT Bombay are top institutes in the country, and the decision on which one is better for you depends on your personal preferences and requirements.
