B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh

Both Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at PEC Chandigarh are great options. You should choose one of these courses based on your preference. The placement opportunities offered are similar, except Mechanical students are allowed for less number of coding job profiles. So, if you are interested in coding, choosing Electrical will be better. According to PEC Chandigarh placement highlights of recent years, the average CTC for these branches stays in the range of INR 5-12 LPA.

Is PEC Chandigarh really degrading year by year, and how is the faculty for CSE and its placement for CSE?

SG
Shikha Gupta Posted On : May 4th, 2021

A news article was published in 2018 which assured that there are a lot of chances that PEC shall be converted into IIT very soon.

Firstly, PEC is part of the University of Punjab. If it is converted into IIT, then it has to be turned into an autonomous institute first, which has not started yet. There is still not any confirmation regarding the conversion of PEC into IIT. It is a huge thing and these type of topics generally goes through a lot of controversies.

If you are taking admission in PEC thinking that you will get a degree from IIT, then you are completely wrong. You will get a degree with a tag of PEC.

It will be better if you stop thinking about the IIT factor. This institute itself a reputed one and provides amazing placements to every one of its students. So, you must be focused on your hard work, career and future career perspectives without thinking about PEC is transformed into IIT.

Each student has a different schedule so below listed are general routines that will try to cover everything.

1st year:

  • There are only 5 subjects with hardly two labs in the 2nd semester and you usually get free around 3 pm.
  • At lunchtime, hostlers go to their mess, and day scholars can be seen eating lunch either at PEC market, admin stairs, or their classrooms.
  • Some will return home at 3 pm unless the student has some college activity after 5 pm.
  • NSS guys will be teaching students from 4 pm to 6 pm and the one with sports will be running, students can see NCC doing parade and drama clubs, students doing practice, and others having their workshops in classrooms.
  • In October students are busy with the fests and sometimes students will be planning for quizzes and assignments.

2nd year:

  • The most hectic year of your life. Almost every day classes will be from 8 pm to 5 pm and then again some college activities after 5 pm.
  • More quizzes, assignments, and labs are given on a regular basis.

3rd year:

  • One semester left before the student leaves the College for internships.
  • Students are busy with the company's activity.
  • College activities certainly get reduced and the academic load is less.

4th year:

  • Only two to three subjects unless the student is taking honors.
  • Classes get over from 11 am to 12 pm.
  • Students are now head of a society or club and have to wait for 5 pm to start the activity.
  • The student has to figure out what they will do in that free time.

This is the typical daily routine of a student at PEC, Chandigarh until they graduate.

Should I take Electrical in NIT Kurushetra or Electrical in PEC Chandigarh?

DK
Deepika Kunwar Posted On : May 4th, 2021

If you think statistically, then PEC Chandigarh is better than NIT Kurukshetra. Considering this, the following reasons are listed:

  1. It is a reputed and A-Brand old institute of India, although it was established 100 years back.
  2. As per the NIRF data, the average salary package of this institute is also higher and can be compared with the old IITs.
  3. The growth rate is still undergoing since its infrastructural development had recently started.
  4. The students here get internship opportunities in top MNCs at International locations.
  5. Lastly, the extracurricular activities of this institute are huge.

Placement at PEC= 1.58* NIT Kurukshetra

Criteria

PEC

NIT Kurukshetra

NIRF Ranking 2020

68

40

Highest CTC

42.5 LPA

17 LPA

Average CTC

10.2 LPA

7.44 LPA

Besides, the internship records of this institute can be compared with old IITs. Students of PEC get approximately 169 internship opportunities, of which 24 were pre-placement offers. Many students also get the opportunity to join as a research intern in a renowned foreign university, a tenure of 6 months.

So, if you to take admission in an institute considering your future with an average package of 10 LPA, then it must be noted that the student strength and competition in PEC are less than NIT Kurukshetra.

How is CSE in NIT Delhi compared to CSE in PEC?

MA
Madhav Aneja Posted On : October 11th, 2023

I will advise you not to compare colleges solely on the basis of rankings and placements because these are too trivial criteria to be considered while choosing your college. One must look at the bigger picture. NIT Delhi, despite being a new institute, has already laid its strong foundation and you can expect excellent placements in the near future.

Here are a few highlights of the institute:

  • Placements: NIT Delhi has an active placement cell that ensures that every student has at least one offer by the end of the placement drive.
  • Campus: The campus has limited facilities but provides enough facilities to ensure good quality education. Students have access to wifi facilities 24/7.
  • Ranking: Don’t let the low rankings mislead you. These ranking bodies consider criteria like campus, branches, alumni, etc which NIT Delhi definitely lacks in because it's new.

Overall, NIT Delhi offers good quality education and a NIT tag that will up your game in higher education.

Is it worth going to PEC Chandigarh taking into account that its ranking is deteriorating?

US
Udhav Sharma Posted On : May 4th, 2021
Studied at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh (2019)

PEC Chandigarh was ranking at 39th before but now it is at 68th rank. It is often argued that NIRF ranking is not legit.

For instance - DTU is placed so low and VIT is placed above BITS this cannot be digested as BITS is way better than VIT in every aspect. Till IITs, it can be digested but after that, it's a joke.

The public perception of PEC is impressive. Thapar University is placed higher than PEC but PEC is way better than Thapar in every aspect.

As a B.Tech student, the main focus will be on placements, so below given is some placement stats of PEC:

Particulars

PEC Chandigarh

Average Salary

Rs. 10 lakhs

Highest Salary

Rs. 45 lakhs

Entrance Criteria

JEE MAIN

Fees

Rs. 6.39 lakhs

Private colleges are better than NIT and PEC. NIRF also takes into account the campus, Ph.D., publications, Research, etc. Maybe PEC is lower in that but if they consider only B. Tech then it will be placed much higher.

Metallurgy at PEC Chandigarh or Environmental at DTU or drop year? I came to know there is option of branch sliding in PEC . So should I go for it?

NB
Nikita Bose Posted On : April 30th, 2021
Studied at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh

Yes, there is an option of branch sliding in PEC. You can change your branch after the second semester (i.e., first year). I know someone who upgraded from Metallurgy to IT. The upgrade is not a difficult task.

Following are a few things that you should keep in mind.

  • You can apply for branch change by filling up the Performa available in the Academic section on the mentioned date.
  • You need to have an average commitment towards your preparation with no special preparation. Only consistent performance in mid-terms will be enough.
  • There has been a change in the rule. Now, instead of two mid-term, there will be only one. So, it will be easy for you to score.

You can definitely go for changing branches in PEC by choosing a branch-like CSE, ECE, or any other of your interest. As for the choice of the branch you should choose the one that interests you.
