IIM Ahmedabad has set the CAT papers 2 times till now, 2009 and 2015. So I will show you the pattern of the paper both the years.
CAT 2009
Time: 150 mins
Number of Questions: 60
Sections:3(VARC,DILR and QA)
VARC Section(20 questions): Moderate-Difficult
The section included RCs and VA(all the basic topics that students practice while preparing).
DILR Section(20 questions): Moderate
DI(10 questions): DI sets were lengthy and involved tedious calculations. More speed was required and speed maths was a challenging part.
LR(10 questions): Pure logical, had little or no calculations.
QA Sections(20 questions): Easy-Moderate
This section tested all basic concepts and formulas. Solving previous years papers will help you in this section.
If the exam is of 2 hours this pattern might be repeated
CAT 2015
Time: 180 mins
Number of questions: 100
Sections: 3 (VARC,DILR and QA)
VARC (34 questions): 20 questions were easy
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR:32 questions): 17–18 correct was good attempt) This section was the most challenging part of CAT 2015
Quantitative Ability(34 QUESTIONS)
The relative easiness of the Quant section was overshadowed by the tougher section, which preceded QA (ie DILR) and contributed to the fatigue factor. There was huge emphasis on Arithmetics and Geometry and even a non engineer could easily solve it.
If the exam is of 3 hours then this pattern could be repeated.
Whether the PGPX course in IIM Ahmedabad is useful for your career depends on what exactly you want to achieve from the course. It could be one of these things:
Increasing your pay
Switching industries
Aiming for a particular position at a particular company
gaining a holistic view of the organization
As much as this course will help you achieve the above goals, your past experience matters the most. The course can be a driving force in your career but not the main force. It will enhance your skills and personality and not change it. So it's best to keep your expectations from the course low and focus on yourself.
Studying at Vikram Sarabhai Library at IIM Ahmedabad is a one of a kind experience in life. You will gain the most peaceful memories of your hours inside the library. Some perks of studying there are:
The DND ambiance obviously. If you need peace to organise your thoughts or study this is the perfect place for you
Proper Air Conditioning facilities let you beat the heat and focus more on reading
The library is filled with book nerds with excellent knowledge of books. So whenever you face a problem you can consult them.
The staff is very helpful and any unavailable study material is made available within a day.
You don’t even get the time to get bored as the library is decked with so many books.
The overall experience of studying at Vikram Sarabhai Library is thrilling and will leave a long lasting impression on you.
Yes, girls and boys are allowed to stay in each other’s hostel in IIM Ahmedabad. The hostels are not common but you can visit the opposite gender hostels anytime.
This relaxation is because of group studies and assignments which require students in the same group to spend time together in a room.
IIM Ahmedabad is definitely one of the best institutes for studies. But it’s not the only one with excellent opportunities. Many other colleges offer better opportunities and a wide range of career options than IIM Ahmedabad.
Many people get selected in IIM Ahmedabad but do not join it. This is because their career goals do not restrict them to IIM Ahmedabad only. One such example is Sudhakar Gupta from NSIT who scored a 100 percentile in 2014. He got selected in all the IIMs but instead chose to pursue a Masters Degree from Cornell University.
At the IIMs, while the career opportunities are excellent, they are more or less streamlined and restrictive in the initial period. So people with broad prospects tend to suffer here.
It depends on your long term career goals and your own conveniences at the end.
The lowest package offered during IIM Ahmedabad PGP placements 2021 was INR 11 LPA. The “Maximum Earning Potential” component is considered while calculating the highest package.
Rather than just academics, IIM Ahmedabad students are interviewed on an overall basis. That is various aspects like extracurricular activities, leadership skills and behaviour management are also tested in the interview round.
Social clubs and college societies are also a part of your interview. But not the most important part though. Some might get selected even without much involvement in clubs while some might not get selected even with much involvement in the same.
You usually are asked about your hobbies to which you can simply answer anything you like doing in your leisure time. It can be as simple as reading novels also. More than anything your confidence while answering the question matters the most.
Some well known alumni in the internet/e-commerce field are
Raghunandan G. - Founder of TaxiForSure, now acquired by Ola Cabs.
Deep Kalra - Founder of MakeMyTrip, one of India’s leading travel sites
Sanjeev Bikhchandani - Founder of Naukri.com, one of the first and most successful job portals in India.
There is a lack of prominent alumni in the technology field because of shortcomings on the part of IIM Ahmedabad. These include it’s curriculum and risk involved in the field.
The primary thing to focus on while at IIM Ahmedabad or any other B School is the journey and not the end. Don’t start your college with the job as the end result. Upgrade your mindset. College is much more than just placements and jobs.
College life is about life struggles, a lot of knowledge, knowing your own self, finding your area or interests and pursuing your passion. So I would say to make the most of the B School, keep the thoughts of your future job aside and adopt a nature of learning new things every day.
Make the most of the liberal days in your life because once you start working your freedom will be restricted.
Yes, there are many people who took a drop for CAT and got selected in IIMs. At this stage, your interview matters the most. So read well and prepare the best to answer ‘what were you doing in the meantime’.
Answer this question confidently because here they are not exposing your weakness but testing your confidence in yourself. Just say that I was preparing to be here for the interview. Further you can claim that all the other candidates who have taken CAT are still at a level same as yours in the interview round. So rather than experience it’s one eagerness and ambitions that counts.
All you need to do is impress the interviewer and you are good to go.
