DTU should be your priority. It is one of the oldest Indian Engineering institutions. It has a brand name and a good reputation. It has better placements, campus, college life, location, etc. than COEP. Only NIT Trichy and NIT Warangal are on par with DTU. Mechanical is a renowned branch at DTU. The Mechanical department has many innovations to its credit. For example, the first Biodiesel Lab in India.
I know someone who did his B.Tech Mechanical from COEP. He chose COEP over a top NIT. According to him, it was not a wise decision for his career. Teaching is done mostly in Marathi at COEP. Some of the faculty members are underqualified and not up to the mark. This made him lose interest in learning and resulted in poor personality development.
At NITs, you study with people from across India and this offers exposure to different cultures. The NIT brand also has its added advantages. NITs have a standard grading system known in the industry. When you graduate from COEP and go to, say IIMs, the grading system at COEP causes a lot of hassle. COEP does not offer cross-culture exposure. Though the labs at COEP are big, the equipment is outdated and non-functional.
A benefit is that COEP is located in Pune which is an automotive hub. Therefore, Mechanical students get to connect with the automotive industry. Pune automotive industry has a large number of COEP alumni. All this allows you to do a lot of live industry projects while on campus.
Overall, choose DTU and if you do not get admission into it, go for lower NITs.
To get CSE at NIT Trichy you need to score 250+. Here is the NIT Trichy cutoff for 2021.

With a percentile this high, you can try going for JEE Advanced. If you still want to try NIT Trichy you can get Metallurgy, Chemical, Production Engineering, Civil, Instrumentation and Control, and some other lower branches. However, you should be a candidate belonging to the General category. You can also get Computer Science and Mechanical if you are in the OBC category.
If you are a candidate of the home state then you can get the streams mentioned previously as well as ECE, EEE, and CSE.
93 percentile in JEE MAIN 2024 roughly corresponds to 83,601-85,000 rank. I am assuming that you are an open category candidate.
Here is the previous year JEE Main cutoff for B.Tech admissions at NIT Trichy-
B.Tech Cutoff 2023 for NIT Trichy (open category)
Branch | HS (Gender-Neutral) | OS (Gender-Neutral) |
---|---|---|
Chemical Engineering | 20,670 | 15,816 |
Civil Engineering | 33,703 | 20,873 |
Computer Science and Engineering | 5,164 | 1,509 |
Electrical and Electronics Engineering | 9,902 | 6,726 |
Electronics and Communication Engineering | 7,153 | 4,642 |
Instrumentation and Control Engineering | 15,486 | 14,240 |
Mechanical Engineering | 16,238 | 10,751 |
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering | 32,122 | 24,678 |
Production Engineering | 26,853 | 25,958 |
From this table, it is evident that unfortunately, you won’t be able to secure a seat at NIT Trichy with 93 percentile ( roughly 83,601-85,000 rank).
95 percentile in JEE Main 2024 is roughly a rank between 59,001-60,000. Since you are an open category candidate, unfortunately, you won’t get a seat in NIT Trichy. However, you can check your chances in the female-only seats if you are eligible for the same.
Here is the 2023 JEE Main cutoff for B.Tech admissions at NIT Trichy (for open category)-
JEE MAIN 2023 Cutoff for Open Category B.Tech Seats at NIT Trichy
Branch | HS (Gender-Neutral) | OS (Gender-Neutral) |
---|---|---|
Chemical Engineering | 20,670 | 15,816 |
Civil Engineering | 33,703 | 20,873 |
Computer Science and Engineering | 5,164 | 1,509 |
Electrical and Electronics Engineering | 9,902 | 6,726 |
Electronics and Communication Engineering | 7,153 | 4,642 |

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering | 32,122 | 24,678 |
Production Engineering | 26,853 | 25,958 |
From the table above, it is clear that 95 percentile is not sufficient to get you a seat at NIT Trichy as an open category candidate.
Since you haven’t mentioned a particular category, I am assuming that you are an unreserved candidate. NITs offer two kinds of seats through JoSAA counseling, one set of seats are reserved for home state candidates, while another set is for students from other states. Home State Quota applies to the candidates who complete their class 11th and 12th from the state of their desired NIT.
A 97 percentile in JEE Main 2024 should correspond to approximately 36,000 rank in the examination. Here is the 2023 cutoff for B.Tech courses at NIT Trichy to give you a basic idea of the current trend-
NIT Trichy 2023 cutoff for JEE MAIN (open category)
Branch | HS (Gender-Neutral) | OS (Gender-Neutral) |
---|---|---|
Chemical Engineering | 20,670 | 15,816 |
Civil Engineering | 33,703 | 20,873 |
Computer Science and Engineering | 5,164 | 1,509 |

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering | 32,122 | 24,678 |
Production Engineering | 26,853 | 25,958 |
As evident from the table above, a rank >=36,000 can sadly not fetch you a seat in NIT Trichy. So 97 percentile will not get you a B.Tech admission at NIT Trichy.
Hello, my name is Junaid Khan. I've completed a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from NIT Trichy. As per my knowledge, it is not possible to transfer from an IIT to an NIT in the 2nd year. One of my friends has just completed his 1st year at IIT Madras. Due to personal issues, he wanted to transfer from his IIT to an NIT in the 2nd year, but he could not.
Both NIT and IIT have limited seats and a strict admission process for their courses. Also, any NIT college in India does not offer Lateral entry. It doesn't matter whether you have completed a 3-year Diploma course, but admission into NIT from 2nd year is not possible anyway.
However, in IIT one can opt for BTech directly from 2nd year through lateral entry. Candidates who wish to transfer from IIT to NIT, have no other option but to waste one year. Students then need to sit for the JEE Main exam again and register themselves for NIT admissions.
Yes, NITs are much cheaper than IITs. NITs and IITs are prestigious institutes in India, known for their Engineering courses. However, some key differences make NITs a cheaper and better option than some IITs.
NITs are funded by the government of that particular state, while IITs are directly funded by the Central Government. Both NITs and IITs have good infrastructure and modern laboratories. NITs offer equal facilities, education, etc. at a lower fee than several IITs.
NITs are much cheaper than IITs. IITs on average charge INR 1.50 - 6.70 Lakhs as the annual tuition fee for UG courses. On the other hand, the lowest annual tuition fee at an NIT for UG courses is INR 50,000. Similarly, the hostel fees, admission fees, and fees for different amenities are much cheaper at NITs.
Despite its low fees, NIT Trichy is placed among the top 10 Engineering colleges in India by various Ranking agencies, leaving behind 2nd and 3rd generation IITs.
