What are some must-have experiences at IIT Guwahati that you would recommend your juniors to experience?

One of my cousins shared a very adventurous experience at IIT Guwahati and she highly recommended every IIT Guwahati to try this once in their life. Visible right from the campus, you can see a mountain peak. She along with her friends decided to climb the mountain and teach the top of it. Although it seemed impossible they embarked on this journey with full confidence and determination.

The journey was indeed tiring with thorns, slippery soil, and rocks becoming major obstacles. But their determination took the better of them and they finally made it to the top. The exhilarating feeling of accomplishment thrilled them to the bone. They were in awe at the spectacular view and the fresh air. They even had snacks and rested there for an hour.

Here are a few things you can keep in mind if you plan to executive this trip one day.

  • Wear a full sleeved jacket, track pant, and shoes
  • Carry water bottles and some snacks
  • Bring a strong stick for support
  • Climb only if you are confident

Many may not consider it safe, and rightly so. But the outcome is too great to be missed.

How is IIT Guwahati

SD
Shubhangi Dutt Posted On : April 28th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (2022)

This answer will talk about both, IIT Guwahati in general and its civil department in particular.

IIT Guwahati is one of the esteemed institutes of the country, well known for its natural beauty. It provides an excellent blend of both academics and extracurriculars. The professors teach the concepts and it’s the student's duty to retain and make the most out of the knowledge gained. Various clubs promote extracurriculars like clubs-robotics, coding, or any technical or cultural clubs.

Specifically talking about the Civil Department, core jobs are scarce leaving many students with no option but to go for no core jobs. Most people don’t give prior thought to selecting the department and end up miserable. However, there are a few who are genuinely interested and go for higher studies. The majority of the students can be seen opting for other fields, coding, analytics, etc.

Ultimately, you should make a well informed decision considering the branch you are interested in and not the Institute. IIT Guwahati is an excellent choice and its natural beauty will definitely make your college life better!

As a student, you can be assured that IIT Guwahati is good enough and it is up to you to perform well. Instead of focusing on what your college can do for you, shift your perspective and think about what you can do for your college. While IITG may not have as many resources as some other IITs like IITB, K, M, and D, it is still worth attending.

At IITG, you can benefit from some excellent professors, optimal resources for every student, good placement opportunities, as well as sports and cultural fests. Don't worry too much, and remember that with hard work, dedication, and effective use of your study time, you can achieve great success. Rather than relying solely on the IIT brand name, aim to make your own mark and make your college proud of your achievements.

How is ECE at IIT, Guwahati?

SG
Sohini Ghose Posted On : May 3rd, 2023

ECE department of IIT Guwahati is known for its excellent research work and quality of education. The department has many professors who are specialized in Signal processing and related areas of electronics. However, the VLSI and Microelectronics group has less number of faculties around 5-6 while electromagnetics and microwaves with only two faculty.

The reason why I am telling you about the faculty count is that the optional courses and projects offered will be having approximately the same ratio of streams as that of faculty expertise. For those interested in a core career or research work need to consider this point seriously.

If you aren’t sure about your career prospects yet, explore options like IT, financial service, or MBA. Students of this branch

How is the Mathematics and Computing in IIT Guwahati?

RD
Rithi Dasgupta Posted On : May 3rd, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati (IIITG)

For a genuine math lover, Mathematics and Computing program at IIT Guwahati is a literal treat. You need to be proficient in Math to take up this course. The syllabus includes core math concepts combined with knowledge of CS as well. Towards the end, the math is confined to statistics and finance. The syllabus is not very flexible initially but becomes so in the last two semesters.

Here are a few pros and cons pertaining to the course

Pros:

  • The MnC branch boasts excellent placements second only to the CS department. The placement percentage stood at 91.94%. Out of the total 62 students that opted for placements, 57 were able to secure decent jobs. However, finance firms and banks are yet to realize the true potential of this department. One can get an INR 20 LPA by doing a decent internship and maintaining a good CGPA.
  • Excellent Master's opportunities are even better than CS students. This is the best option for those planning to get a master's abroad. To upgrade your CV, you can do internships and choose electives accordingly. All this will increase your chances of admission to CSE, data science, finance, and mathematics.
  • Job opportunities: This program has excellent opportunities in terms of jobs as well as research and many fields are open to hire students of this course.

Cons

  • The rigidity of the syllabus makes it the jack of all trades master of none. You cannot choose the elective according to your interest during the initial years. Many useless courses add to the overall workload with no increase in knowledge.
  • Those who aren’t into finance may find it difficult to cope with it as it’s impossible to drop finance courses during the initial years.

In the near future when the IT industry will be at its peak, MnC might be better than CSE in terms of monetary benefits. If you aren’t certain about your area of interest, then Maths and Computing are definitely better than all core branches except CS.

Did I make a mistake by choosing IIT Guwahati CSE over IIT Varanasi CSE?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : May 4th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

It's difficult for me to say whether choosing IIT Guwahati CSE over IIT Varanasi CSE was a mistake without more information about your specific circumstances and goals. Both IIT Guwahati and IIT Varanasi are highly respected institutions, and both offer strong Computer Science programs that are rightly comparable in almost every aspect.

The placement scenario is similarly decent at both institutes with very little emphasis on research. The active Coding Club/ CSEA at IIT Guwahati gives it a slight edge over others. Both the institutes are excellent choices for whatever you want to do after graduation be it research, open source development, or a stable job.

The only distinguishing feature is the weather as IIT Guwahati has better weather conditions than IIT BHU. However, this flaw is compensated by better connectivity of Varanasi being on the mainland.

The key to branch change in IIT Guwahati or any other IIT is Determination. Branch change isn't that difficult if you are dedicated to it. Once you enter any IIT, you will find yourself surrounded by millions of opportunities and things to explore. Without even realizing it, you will find yourself busy with quizzes, hostel tournaments, or inter-college tournaments. You will be exploring so many things both in academics and otherwise. Soon, it will be the time of your end semester for which you have not prepared in advance as you were busy with everything else but academics. will have a week or two before the end semester.

For branch change, you will have to minimize your distractions and sacrifice all extra activities to score maximum marks. It’s best to attend all classes, tutorials, labs, and lab lectures for maximum retention.

However, it’s better to explore the branch you have first and then decide whether you want to change your branch or not.
