NIT Trichy is the eBay among all the NITs. The ECE department of NIT Trichy is known for providing academic excellence to the students. You will be able to learn the different concepts with ease as the faculty is experienced and can make you easily understand the hard topics. Their lectures are mind-blowing so make sure never to miss them. Again, when it comes to infrastructural facilities, NIT Trichy makes sure to give the very best to its students. You will have access to gyms, sports clubs, swimming pools, libraries, laboratories, etc. The campus life is active and you will get to meet with students from other departments as well. When it comes to placements, again NIT Trichy is eBay because of its vast industry connection and reputation, only the top companies visit the college during the placement season.
As one of my friends studied at NIT Trichy, I might be able to help you with your question. He mentioned that things have now improved.
Sitting near the router (outside your room) or going to the Octagon or Annex (NIT Trichy's computer centers) are the best ways to get high speeds. LANs will fix most of the internet problems on campus; however, it is not sure when they will be introduced.
I have a few friends from NIT Trichy and according to them, curriculum and placement wise, NIT Trichy is best for doing an M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering. It is even considered better than many IITs. Here is a brief overview of the course.

Another advantage of doing an MTech from NIT Trichy is that there is no Teaching Assistantship. Although you may have to handle labs once in a while.
All the 3 NITs namely NIT Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal are considered to be among the top NITs and are highly regarded engineering colleges. Their rankings are also quite similar but in my opinion, the preference order should be
NIT Warangal>NIT Surathkal>NIT Trichy
The reason Trichy should be your last option is because it does not permit students to go for Internship which in turn results in no PPOs. Many students get PPOs and thus are free from the stress of sitting for placements. Also, internships give you a better experience of the real world. Here is a brief overview of these 3 colleges

The placement scenario of these NITs is somewhat the same so that should not be your primary concern. Focus on personal preferences like proximity to home, hostel fcilties, etc
I have friends in all the 3 institutes so I happen to be the right person to answer your question
A friend in NIT Trichy told me that the lectures are boring and the professors are incapable of delivering the concepts in a skillful manner. Most of them are hardly interested in teaching and offer no individual assistance. Only a few exceptional professors help you here.
Meanwhile, my friends at BITS Pilani and IIT Bombay were all praised for their respective institutes.
So yes there is a huge difference in the quality of education and opportunities offered by the aforementioned institutes. However, in the long run, it’s your skills and talents that matter.
There are several reasons supporting the cause that NIT Trichy is better than NIT Surathkal, with the fact that there are unemployed M.Tech graduates even from NIT Surathkal. The table below gives a brief overview of the institutes.
Particulars |
NIT Trichy |
NIT Surathkal |
Total Fees (B.Tech) |
Rs. 5.65 Lakhs |
Rs. 5.45 Lakhs |

One of my friends got ousted from M.Tech in NIT Surathkal due to poor marks in the beginning semester. In the next year, he got into NIT Trichy and successfully secured a PSU job in placement. On the other hand, there were several students from that batch of NIT Surathkal who remained unemployed.
In the batch of 2012-14, about 29 students from M.Tech were unplaced in NIT Surathkal. Even the training and placement cell and the department did not care about the failure of so many students.
There are students from NIT Surathkal who are still struggling with odd jobs in hand, and some are even unable to settle in life.
So, if you have to choose between NIT Surathkal and NIT Trichy, prefer NIT Trichy. You will get better placement and opportunities at NIT Trichy as compared to NIT Surathkal.
The choice of the institute for pursuing an MTech in Electrical Engineering depends on what you want from your Masters.
Ultimately, the better institute is a matter of preferences and career prospects.
NIT Trichy is the better option. It is better than SSN Chennai in terms of academics, infrastructure, peer group, and campus life. The student crowd of NITT is amazing. You will share your lectures with talented students and get to learn from them. It has a good placement record as well. According to NIT Trichy placements 2022, the average CTC received by the students was INR 6.5 LPA.
Although as a branch ECE is more preferred by students, given a chance you should choose NIT Trichy.
Between these two options, NIT Trichy is definitely better. Here are the reasons why.
According to teaching, infrastructure, facilities, and campus life, NIT Trichy is definitely better than VIT.
One of my friends studied environmental engineering at NIT Trichy. According to him, he is quite satisfied with this college placement. He further mentions that this college provides the best placement for the students of M.Tech compared to other IIT colleges.
He claimed that NIT Trichy is better than all the newer IITs and other NITs. This college is even better than IIT Roorkee in terms of M.Tech placement opportunities.
