How is the industrial power and automation for an M.Tech at NIT Calicut?

DS
Devesh Saraf Posted On : August 21st, 2023
Studied at NIT Calicut

NIT Calicut Industrial Power and Automation branch is a perfect mix of Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation/Automation. It comprises important elements of both fields and is a great choice for students interested in the field.

  • However, if your primary goal is to get placed , then you have come to the wrong place. Most companies visit NIT Calicut to recruit BTech students and they are given preference to MTech students. A few exceptional cases get placed in huge firms though.
  • The faculty pool is very small and the most highly regarded professor of the branch is Dr Ashok S.
  • The branch has excellent lab facilities and is therefore a great choice for research enthusiasts. The IPA labs are highly advanced labs with modern equipment. The labs have PLC, SCADA, DCS, VFD, BLDC setup, and DSP setups too.

Overall the IPA course at NIT Calicut is a great choice if you are interested in the field and want to pursue a career in research.

What are the tips for department change in IIT Delhi?

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : April 10th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

One of my friends could get into Civil Engineering due to her rank but chose to stay because of being close to her hometown. She started preparing for a department change and after working relentlessly for a year, she was able to get a chemical dual degree. This initially seemed impossible because of the geniuses she was surrounded with.

The first semester was a nightmare as she scored only a 7.6 CGPA because of her poor performance in Applied Mechanics and Engineering Drawing. However, with a bigger picture in mind, she started working harder and by the end of the second semester, she was able to score an 8.48 SGPA.

When asked for tips, she said she completely was relying on her luck but kept working to the fullest. She left no classes unattended and was the first one to submit assignments.

Ultimately, you need to work hard, trust the process and wait for the results patiently.

How will Maharaja Surajmal Institute be in the coming 4 years?

AP
Aditi Patel Posted On : May 31st, 2021
CSE, MSIT (2018)

I have a friend who is an alumnus of MSIT and here’s what he had to say about this.

Faculty: There is a significant decline in terms of management and teaching. The faculty members are mostly doctorate students and they are pursuing their studies as well as teaching, so it is fair to say that they teach you with no sense of belonging.

Infrastructure: Most of the campuses are growing old and there is hardly any maintenance done. They started upgrading a few years back but the development is very slow. Labs are not equipped with the necessary equipment.

Placements: MSIT has a good placement record. There is every likelihood that the prospects for placement may dry in the future years, as the quality of education stays stagnant. The average CTC offered has remained the same since 2004. Here are the recent placement highlights.

Average CTC

3.6 LPA

Highest CTC

47 LPA

So, according to my friend, unless some drastic change happens, it is less likely that things at MSIT will improve in near future.

You can quickly get on track with a consistent study routine. You need to invest one hour on weekdays and 2 to 3 hours on weekends in your studies. Let us go through the subject-wise cycle in detail.

Physics

  • There is no place for analytical abilities. You need to understand the concepts thoroughly and revise them often
  • Electronics Engineering - You need to gain knowledge of the basics of Electronics engineering, which includes the working of flip-flops, their usage in digital clocks, etc.
  • English - Have a well-advanced knowledge of English
  • M1- Never skip M1, You need to practice a minimum of 20 minutes daily and perform well in the midterm and final exams
  • Physics Lab - Lab experiments are a peculiar part of the studies. You should have a good understanding of every experiment. Complete the records on time and attend the viva confidently.
  • PSCB and Lab – Learn C or C++ systematically and in labs, get well-versed with Ubuntu

Chemistry

  • Study both organic and inorganic parts and make sure to score good grades as well
  • Basic Electrical Engineering – Have a strong base on this subject and understand the concept
  • Basic Mechanical Engineering – You can refer to ‘Holy book: Mathur and Mehta’ to get the concepts clear
  • Workshop – Ensure good performance in the viva
  • Chemical Lab – Here, viva plays an important role. Learn the experiments well like colour change, processing, etc.
  • Engineering Mechanics – It mainly dealt with free-body diagrams. Practice well and learn new techniques taught in the class
  • M2 – The main focus of M2 includes double and triple integrals and Laplace transforms. Make sure to practice daily.

What is the dress code at IIST, BITS and NIT-Trichy?

DR
Dhiman Ram Posted On : September 1st, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India (2018)

There is no dress code in BITS. One of my friends is from the Goa campus but I am pretty sure that things are the same across all three campuses. You can wear shorts and a t-shirt to the class.

In NIT Trichy, this depends on the professor whose class you're attending and depends on which year you are in. According to the classification –

  • In your 1st year, almost all professors will try to make you wear formals at the beginning of the year.
  • Slowly it'll reduce and they will only ask you to wear formal shirts at the very least.
  • Most of the teachers do not mind T-shirts but some of them are really against it.
  • In your 2nd, 3rd and final year you can just show up wearing casual pants and some shirts and T-shirts.

In IIST, you can wear whatever you want but it should be within the limits of decency as seen by the current society. So there are no strict rules regarding the dress codes.

To prepare yourself for this section, give 1-2 hours per day to brush up on your verbal ability skills. This time would be sufficient for your preparation including vocabulary and practice sessions. Try concentrating on your speed and accuracy while preparing. You can read newspapers, and novels to improve your skills too.

All these topics form a major chunk of the verbal ability section. It can only be improved by consistent practice and hard work. You should try and practice several exercises every day to improve your verbal ability skills. This would help you during the examination.

Which is the better choice for a CSE, ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bhubaneswar or IIT Gandhinagar?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : June 16th, 2023

The aforementioned IITs have witnessed exponential growth over the past few years and are good options for engineering. You will have to consider your personal preferences to make the right decision. All the IITs mentioned have progressed well. You need to look over various factors while making a choice. Also, I will like to add IIT Patna and IIT Ropar as they also have been doing quite well.

  • On the basis of the cutoff, IIT Gandhinagar is the winner after which comes IIT Ropar.
  • All the new IITs except IIT Ropar have managed to shift to their newly constructed permanent campus out of which IIT Gandhinagar seems to have the most beautiful campus.
  • IIT Gandhinagar CSE has been established not very long ago and lacks the credibility yet. However, since IIT Gandhinagar functions under IIT Bombay, it will soon give promising results with a rich coding culture.
  • Sparing IIT Gandhinagar, the CSE placements of all new IITs is visibly good.
  • ISM is a new IIT but an old institute and thus has better cultural clubs and events than the newly established IITs.

In my opinion, IIT Gandhinagar should be your first choice among the new IITs followed by IIT Patna.

How is materials engineering at IIT Delhi?

KS
Kunal Sharma Posted On : April 10th, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Some key points pertaining to the newly launched branch, Materials Engineering at IIT Delhi are

  • Small alumni base: Because it has been established recently, it lacks an extensive alumni pool and has a few seniors only
  • Curriculum: Being the recent most branch, the curriculum is well-updated in accordance with industry standards. Moreover, the workload is average and gives you time to focus on extra activities.
  • Opportunities: The best part about this branch is the plethora and diversity of opportunities it has to offer. You are free to explore your area of interest along with the core coursework. It’s best for those who are not aware of their passion.
  • Placements: Very few core offers are made to BTech in comparison to MTech students. But non-core opportunities are plenty for those seeking jobs right after graduation. Additionally, there are opportunities for higher education, research work, and entrepreneurship also.
  • Faculty: The professors are keen to improve the image of the department and work passionately to do so. Their enthusiasm in turn is a driving force for the students to excel.
  • Batch size: The branch has a very less intake with a batch of only around 40 students. However, this facilitates better student-student relations as well as better student-faculty relations.

Overall the department is new and has a much more interesting curriculum and diverse opportunities. Its research culture is almost at par with that of CS, Engineering Physics, or biotechnology.
