In general, it is a good idea to gain work experience before doing an MBA due to the maturity that gives you. At IIM Ahmedabad, a lot of placement opportunities ask for at least 18 months of work experience depending on which field you are opting for. If you are a fresher, you are going to miss out on those opportunities.
So, having work experience is definitely an added advantage. It does not sound like a good decision if you are going for a Masters in Business Administration and have not been to any workspace personally. Peer learning is an integral part of management education. You will be able to contribute more to that only if you have valid word experience. So, it definitely makes sense to defer for a fresher or student with less than a year of work experience.
Your study life at IIM Ahmedabad or Infact any educational institute is influenced by two factors:
Your past academic records
Your current motivation and discipline
So as an IITian you have an upper hand in academic degree. Now the driving force is your motivation. There are cases where IIT pass outs fail to top and also where an IIT passout tops the class. So yes as an IITian you do have an advantage but it is limited. It’s your own self that defines the quality of your study life at IIM Ahmedabad.
I have a few friends at both XLRI and IIM A and based on the interaction I had with them, I will say that rigor is similar to a greater extent. It is more of a choice - you can choose to let loose or work hard. You can choose to study 3, 4, or 5 hours additionally to have a strong foundation over a topic or simply not.
Academic Rigor - Ranking (XLRI>IIM A):
If we judge these institutes based on the data collected by the Govt. of India, then XLRI coursework is more rigorous as compared to IIM A.
In ranking, Graduation Outcome (GO) is the determining factor of teaching and learning ability of the students, graduation average, success of securing good placements, going for higher education. It is measured based on various parameters such as placement average, Median CTC, percentage of students going for higher education, etc.
There’s a sub-parameter called GPH, i.e. combined matric for placements and higher studies under GO. It shows the academic rigor of an institute. According to the recent statistics, the scores are as follows.
However, rigor is dependent on an individual's decisions and perspectives hence it tends to vary significantly from student to student.
The placement on campus is affected by your grades. Most finance and consulting firms are prohibited. So it comes down to startups, Tier 2 marketing, media, and other companies, or companies that hire for attitude.
Once you start working, you will be able to easily make up lost ground if you are willing to hustle and communicate well. As a result, there is no single general rule. Some people in the bottom 20% fare extremely poorly, while others are moderately well. In comparison to the top 20%, where the majority perform exceptionally well and a small minority perform exceptionally poorly.
Your grades do impact the campus placement. Most of the finance and consultant companies will be out of bound if you do not maintain a certain CGPA. So, your choice is limited to the startups, media companies, tier 2 marketing, or companies that hire for character.
Once you start working, if you are willing to hustle and can communicate well, then you will be able to recover lost ground easily. And who knows, the startup that no one wanted to associate with might become the next big thing in the industry.
So, there is no generic rule here. As some of the students, who are in the bottom 20% do bad, some do average, and some make it big. In contrast to the top 20%, where most of the students do well, and a small minority of students do bad.
Overall, it depends upon you how you perform in the real world as some top students also do struggle whereas some of the bottom students shine.

So, with your academic profile, even a 100 percentile in CAT will not fetch you a call from IIM Ahmedabad. However, you can go for top B Schools like FMS Delhi, SP Jain, MDI Gurugram, etc. that give more preference to CAT scores than par academic performance.
I wouldn’t say that as a student of IIM Ahmedabad and also a resident of Ahmedabad, visits from your family members will be a problem. This is because the maximum duration of your day will be spent in classes, studying for exams or assignments. You will not even have the time to be disturbed by your family members. It’s not that big of a factor that might change your decision to go to IIM Calcutta or Bangalore rather than IIM Ahmedabad. Moreover chances are that you might face some health issues and it's to your advantage as an Ahmedabad resident that your family members will tend to you so that you can recover quickly.
